Tom Dwan Wins Second Live Tournament Title At Triton Series Madrid

The High-Stakes Cash Game Player Secured His Second Victory In A Few-Day Span After More Than 16 Winless Years Since His First Cash

Tom Dwan did not win his first live poker tournament title until 16 years, 7 months, and 3 weeks after he first cashed in a brick-and-mortar event. He didn’t have to wait nearly as long the second time around.

Just two days after winning the 2022 Triton Series Madrid €25,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha event for his first trophy, Dwan managed to find his way to the winner’s circle again. The man known to many by his online screen name ‘durrrr’ emerged victorious in the €30,000 short deck event at the same series, overcoming a field of 33 entries to earn €336,000 ($352,800 USD).

Dwan now has just shy of $5.4 million in recorded tournament earnings, despite being primarily focused on cash games both live and online throughout the majority of his time in poker. This was the fifth-largest score of his career.

This event played out in the span of a single day. The field of 33 was narrowed to a single table of seven competitors, with only six set to make the money. Triton co-founder Paul Phua was ultimately knocked out on the bubble, meaning that the remaining contenders would all earn at least $72,975 USD.

That sum went to American poker pro Chris Brewer, who was eliminated in sixth place when he was knocked out in a three-way all-in against Dwan and Elton Tsang, with Dwan coming out on top. This was Brewer’s 13th final-table finish of the year. In addition to the money, he also scored 112 Card Player Player of the Year points for his deep run in this event. With three titles, 2,729 points and nearly $1.8 million in year-to-date POY earnings, Brewer has moved into 11th place in the 2022 POY race sponsored by Global Poker.

Another Triton co-founder, Richard Yong, then ran A-J into the pocket aces of Dwan to narrow the field to four. Yong earned $93,450 USD for his latest deep run, increasing his career total to more than $15.6 million.

Dwan scored another knockout when his A-Q made the nut flush to eliminate "Danny Tang. ": World Series of Poker bracelet winner from Hong Kong earned $119,700 USD and 168 POY points for his eighth final-table showing of the year. He now sits in seventh place in the overall standings, with more than $3.3 million in earnings accused so far in 2022.

Ivan Leow’s quest for a third Triton title fell just short this time around. He ran into a turned straight for Elton Tsang to hit the rail in third place ($155,925 USD). Tsang, the winner of the 2016 Big One For One Drop Invitational, was ultimately unable to come from behind against Dwan. He earned $244,650 USD as the runner-up.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded in this event:
