New Hampshire Lawmakers Want Piece of Poker Pie

Money Would Be Pulled From Tournaments Held for Charities

New Hampshire’s legislators have ironed out the details of a proposed tax that would target charity poker tournaments and cash games in the state. The proposal also would raise the limits of cash games from $1-$2 to $2-$4. No-limit cash games would still be prohibited.

If approved, 3 percent of the prize pool in charity tournaments (the only poker tournaments allowed in the state) and 10 percent of the pot in cash games would go to the state.

New Hampshire recently began to allow its racetracks and private proprietors to hold charity poker tournaments and spread small cash games, and these games are becoming increasingly popular. Right now, the state doesn’t benefit from any of the action, and several legislators want to change that.  The bill will probably be voted on sometime this summer.

CardPlayer.com recently launched a state-by-state series on poker legality. The first state profiled happened to be New Hampshire.
