The 2023 World Series of Poker $25,000 heads-up championship kicked off with plenty of the biggest names in the game in the field, including six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, three-time bracelet winner Doug Polk, defending champion Dan Smith, defending world champion Espen Worsted, all-time money leader Justin Bonomo, and ten-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey.
One of the most successful players in this event in recent years is John Smith, a 76-year-old Purple Heart recipient from La Habra Heights, California. Smith is a highway contractor by trade but has made the finals of this event twice, in 2016 and 2017, finishing runner-up both times. Smith also made the sweet 16 back in 2014. Card Player caught up with him before this year’s first round to discuss the event that is, to him, essentially the super bowl.
