World Poker Tour Vietnam Series Canceled Right Before Start

Third Poker Tournament Series Shut Down In Recent Months

Booking a flight to Vietnam to play some poker may not be the best idea these days after the third major tournament series in the country was canceled this week.

A World Poker Tour stop planned for Hanoi was set to run from May 14-27 at Crown Poker Club, but was canceled just as the event was set to kick off.

“Crown Poker Club regrets this inconvenience,” the club said in announcing the event’s cancellation. “This is truly a difficult decision because, throughout its operation, Crown Poker Club has always prioritized safety and improving tournament quality first. Therefore, Crown Poker Club hopes for the sharing and sympathy of our partners, customers, and all players.”

This series had previously ran successfully in 2023 and 2022, with a WPT Deepstacks stop in 2021.

Latest Vietnamese Cancellation

The move makes the WPT event the third major poker series canceled in the country since December. Crown Poker Club reported that the cancellation was “due to technical reasons,” however a local Dan Tri media report noted that organizers didn’t receive the correct government clearances to run the event.

“More specifically, the report suggests the series had not received necessary approvals from the Hanoi Department of Culture, with authorities ordered to ‘strictly handle’ those involved if there is evidence of ‘disguised gambling’ being organized,” Inside Asian Gaming reported.

Crown advised players who had already purchased early bird tickets for the event to contact customer service. That doesn’t help some players who may already be in the country or who have already purchased airfare.

In April, the Asian Poker Festival Spring Series was also abruptly canceled after festival organizers cut ties with the Royal Poker Club. This left organizers running an event that did not match a licensing request from the government.

In December, the Asian Poker Tour canceled the Hanoi Billions series in the middle of the main event. Some players wondered if the government played a role in shutting down the event.
