Indiana could join a growing list of states considering regulation of the daily fantasy sports industry next year.
According to the Tribune Star, state lawmaker Alan Morrison said recently that he’s drafting legislation to regulate the contests and give the state’s casinos some skin in the game.
“We’ve got an existing gaming industry here that has to play by our rules,” Morrison said. “For another entity to come in and play by a separate set of rules isn’t fair.”
According to Eilers Research, daily fantasy games will generate around $2.6 billion in entry fees this year and grow by 41 percent annually. The market could reach $14.4 billion in 2020.
Last month, Nevada became the sixth state to ban DFS sites. Arizona, Louisiana, Iowa, Montana and Washington State also don’t allow the popular sites.
The states of New Jersey, Illinois, California, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts have indicated interest in regulation instead of a ban.
In addition to generating more revenue by regulating DFS, some in Indiana are considering a Las Vegas-style casino in Indianapolis.
Indiana’s casino industry is worth around $2.5 billion annually, but it is facing serious competition from gaming expansion in neighboring Ohio and Illinois.
