S.C. Bill to Legalize Home Poker Moves On

Bill to Face Judiciary Committee This Week

A bill that will legalize small-stakes home poker games in South Carolina passed a subcommittee and will be presented to the Judiciary Committee this week.

Games of cards and chance are currently illegal under state law. State Rep. William Scarborough introduced this bill in hopes of amending the existing laws to allow people to play cards in the privacy of their homes for "the sole purpose of recreational activity."

"I'm just trying to allow people to play a friendly game of cards in their homes," Scarborough said.

He wants to make it clear that he is not advocating the spread of public gambling and would like to ensure that the bill does not allow the return of video poker. According to the bill, certain poker card games would be legal as long as the house does not take a cut. Scarborough is optimistic in the passage of the bill.
