A winter storm was moving through the Northeast during the middle of the week, prompting the state of Massachusetts to postpone the important Wednesday morning discussions on the casino proposals from MGM Resorts International, Wynn Resorts and Mohegan Sun.
Each is vying to build a casino in the state.
MGM will now present its plan on Thursday morning, while Wynn and Mohegan Sun were rescheduled for the afternoon on Wednesday.
In 2011, the state passed a law that called for three Las Vegas-style casinos, one in three geographic regions. One slots-only parlor was also authorized.
Mohegan Sun and Wynn Resorts are in competition for the sole right to build in the eastern region, while MGM is the only applicant for a casino in the western region.
All three have been approved by their respective communities. It’s now up to the state to pick.
The third brick-and-mortar casino will likely be from The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, which is in the middle of a process to secure land to construct such a facility. It is possible, though, that the tribe will not. In that case, Massachusetts could solicit more proposals from commercial operators down the road.
