Danes Win Global Race for Gold in Tournament Play

Card Player Research Tracks World's Most Successful Poker Nations


Gus Hansen, one of Denmark's leading poker professionalsCard Player’s global tournament tracking system has concluded that, per capita, Denmark performs the best when it comes to tournament play. Gus Hansen is a shining example of the nation’s talents, with winnings of more than $5.7 million.

In true Olympic style, Card Player awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals to any country whose players came first, second, or third in major international tournaments, such as the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour.

This research is due to be published in the October edition of Card Player Poker + Sports, and readers will also be able to follow the ongoing battle for medals in forthcoming issues.

Currently, the top five countries in the poker tournament world are:

  1. Denmark — 1.85 medals per million residents (MPMR)
  2. USA — 1.30 MPMR
  3. Australia — 0.83 MPMR
  4. Canada — 0.66 MPMR
  5. Norway — 0.65 MPMR
