Watkinson is no newcomer to poker. He has been playing in major poker tournaments since as early as 1994, but he had a breakout year in 2004, when he earned almost $1.6 million, mainly due to three high-profile runner-up finishes. His first major win came in a pot-limit Omaha event during the 2006 World Series of Poker, where he earned a bracelet and more than $650,000. Then, just last year, he came close to taking a bracelet in The Big Dance when he made the final table of the WSOP main event. He eventually finished in eighth place — having outlasted 6,350 other entrants — earning almost $586,000.
Watkinson, who was recently featured on the cover of Card Player magazine, has more than $3.8 million in lifetime tournament winnings. He uses a portion of those winnings and his public profile to help a cause dear to his heart, rescuing captive chimpanzees. Watkinson has adopted two chimps himself.
