Finn's Spend €50 million Per Year on Online Poker

State-Run Betting Operator Wants to Capture Share of Poker Market

Finnish news agency STT has reported that Finnish poker players are spending €50 million per annum on foreign poker sites.  State-run lottery and betting monopoly Veikkaus believes it could capture at least a portion of this spend by operating an online poker site, much like Svenska Spel does in neighbouring Sweden.

“We could gather the majority of the revenue flowing out,” said Ilkka Juva, communications manager from the company. “Certainly not all of it, but two thirds of €50 million could be attainable.”

The agency said a working group would report its recommendations for reform of gambling in the country in December 2008.
