SpadeClub’s latest $5,000 event winner, George “padre99” Stamas, began playing poker with his friends when he was just 9 years old. He now frequents casino poker rooms by day and enjoys playing on SpadeClub by night. Stamas recently met up with Card Player to discuss his SpadeClub win.
Card Player: How did you hear about SpadeClub?
George “padre99” Stamas: I have been reading Card Player for five or six years, now. That is where I saw the ad for SpadeClub.
CP: How long have you been playing poker? Do you consider yourself a recreational player, amateur, or professional poker player?
GS: I have been playing seriously for about 30 years. I go to the casino four to five times a week and play online every night, so I guess you could call me a professional.
CP: Do you think SpadeClub is a good learning ground for people who are looking to start playing?
GS: I think that SpadeClub is a great place for people to learn the game. They can’t get hurt too badly while they are learning.
CP: What do you think sets great players apart from merely good players?
GS: It seems to me that the truly great players have something special. They can smell weakness and always seem to know when to move their chips.
CP: Was there a particular key hand that you played in the tournament that helped lead you to victory?
GS: Overall, I think that I played well throughout the tournament. I didn’t let the beats get to me. I changed gears well, and once we got down to four players, I thought that I was in good shape, and I love playing heads up.
CP: Do you have any plans for the money you just won?
GS: I already cashed out! I’ve got to pay for another month of SpadeClub!
CP: What do you think of the format for the tournaments on SpadeClub?
GS: I am very impressed with the SpadeClub and the way they run the whole show. I like the tournament structure.
CP: How do you keep your points up on SpadeClub? Does your playing style differ when playing a points tournament versus a cash tournament on SpadeClub?
GS: I use the point-builder tournaments and the qualifiers to earn most of my points. I would like to say my play doesn’t differ, but I think playing for points takes some of the pressure off.
CP: What event do you look forward to most?
GS: I have not played in the $40,000 tournament, yet, but I am really looking forward to it. I have earned tokens for two of them, so far.
[The next SpadeClub $40,000 event will be on April 6. All participants need to earn red tokens through qualifiers in order to participate in this event.]
CP: What advice can you give to other SpadeClub members looking to go deep in these tournaments?
GS: Just to enjoy yourself and mix up your game.
