Borgata Forced to Provide Overlay in Poker Tournament

It Missed its Entrant Mark by Five Last Friday

On Friday, for the first time in the history of the Borgata poker room, an overlay was needed to match a prize-pool guarantee for its $330 buy-in, $75,000-guaranteed hold’em event. The casino blamed horrible weather in the Atlantic City area for barely not attracting enough players to cover the guarantee. The city experienced a rainstorm with 20 mph gusting winds that day, and the tournament was short the number of entrants it needed to match the guarantee by five players.

As it was, 245 players played in the event, and the Boragta covered the remaining $1,500 that was needed to reach the $75,000-guaranteed prize pool.

“We will continue to cover all overlays for all guaranteed events as we have promised from the beginning,” said Ray Stefanelli, director of poker marketing. “Borgata will always guarantee the money will be there for customers when they show up to play in our tournaments. Adding $1,500 to [Friday’s] prize pool is just one of the steps Borgata is willing to take to fulfill our promise and keep our customers satisfied.”

The Borgata holds three weekly tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. Every Friday at noon, the casino holds a tournament with a $75,000-guaranteed prize pool. It also holds tourneys with $20,000-guaranteed prize pools for both of its Wednesday tournaments. The 11 a.m. Wednesday tourney has a buy-in of $100, and the tourney at $7 p.m. has a buy-in of $150.
