Foxwood’s gambling floor is set to grow by 50,000 square feet under a new plan announced Wednesday.

Foxwoods Casino said that it plans to open the new gaming space next year as well as a celebrity chef-owned restaurant. The project is part of the casino celebrating its 30th anniversary.

In February, the casino announced a project to expand its meeting space.

“From our modest bingo beginnings in 1986 to the impressive, full sweep of gaming options now available at Foxwoods, we are excited to announce yet another amenity that will entice guests from near and far to visit,” Jason Guyot, Foxwoods’ president and CEO, said in a statement. “Through our team’s shared commitment of evolving the Foxwoods experience, together we are continuing to redefine what it means to be a leader in hospitality, gaming and entertainment, and cannot wait to bring this vision to life.”

The announcement said that the gaming floor expansion will be located in the Grand Ballroom in the casino’s Grand Pequot area. It’s unclear how many new slots or table games will be included in the new floor space.

Foxwoods currently has around 3,000 slots and about 250 table games.

The casino already has around 300,000 square feet of gambling space. Construction on the new project is scheduled to begin in November and is expected to be completed next year.

Last fall, Foxwoods opened its sportsbook after the state of Connecticut approved the activity. The state is one of more than 30 in the country with sports betting. Foxwoods partnered with DraftKings for sports betting.

The casino is owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, a federally recognized Indian tribe located at one of the oldest reservations in existence, Mashantucket, in Southeastern Connecticut.

Foxwoods opened on Feb. 15, 1992. In 1992, the tribe added table games, followed by additional slot machines in 1993. For years after opening in 1992, Foxwoods had a monopoly on casino gambling in the region.
