Most areas of Louisiana voted in favor of legalizing sports betting Tuesday as 52 of the state’s 64 parishes decided to allow it.
Unlike the other two sports betting ballot initiatives in Maryland and South Dakota, the sports betting legislation that was passed by lawmakers allowed for each individual parish to decide for itself, instead of making it a statewide issue.
The Associated Press is saying that another seven parishes are still too close to call, meaning only five have made a decisive choice against it. Catahoula, Franklin, LaSalle, West Carroll and Winn were the predictably rural parishes that said “No” to sports betting, while Beauregard, Caldwell, Grant, Jackson, Richland, Sabine and Union are still counting votes, according to a Louisiana-based CBS affiliate.
Like Maryland and South Dakota, the legislators still need to agree on regulations and tax rates for its market, which will get done during the 2021 legislative session. The best-case scenario for bettors is a launch in late 2021. The more likely scenario is a 2022 launch.
It was a predictable outcome given the state had a similar vote two years ago when 47 parishes voted to legalize real-money daily fantasy sports competitions.
According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, estimates on the potential tax revenue derived from sports betting is still unclear.
With legalization in Maryland, South Dakota and Louisiana from this election cycle, there are 24 states that allow sports betting, though several are still pending a rollout of its market.
