Over the last two years, Ossi ‘Monarch’ Ketola has taken on some of the best poker players in the world in a series of high-stakes heads-up poker matches. He’s won big, and lost big, but everything hit an entirely new level this week at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Jeju.
Ketola battled Poker Hall of Famer and fellow Finn Patrik Antonius in a $20 million heads-up match, broadcast on Triton platforms. The sideshow that typically follows Ketola, who typically embraces controversy in many forms, including racism and outright Nazi salutes, quieted down on this night.
With each player putting up $10 million, there appeared to be genuine nerves surrounding this high-stakes match. After an hour of play with large stretches of silence, Antonius asked, “Are you nervous at all?” Ketola responded, “Low key, a bit?” They compared the feeling to what a $2 million match might look and feel like, and agreed it wasn’t the same.
“Good,” concluded Antonius. “We’re here to feel.”
After more than four hours of play, Ketola left the stage feeling better than his opponent, having emerged as the winner in the $20 million showdown after putting together a late run following long stretches of tight, back-and-forth poker.

Early on in the match, Ketola established he was willing to push his aggressiveness to the limit. With $2 million already in the pot, on a board of 9♣4♣2♠J♠9♠, he bet $3 million on the river. Antonius, who flopped a flush draw and turned top pair with K♣J♣, ultimately let his hand go.
Ketola’s 6♥3♥ represented a busted gutshot straight draw on the river, but his big bet got the job done and pushed him into the lead.
Antonius wasn’t about to get fully run over, though. The high-stakes regular found a big call with queen-high on a K♠J♦5♣J♣9♦ board, sniffing out a pure bluff from Ketola, who had eight-high.

Ketola eventually pulled out to a big lead and seemingly had Antonius in deep trouble in one of the biggest pots of the match to that point. Antonius had flopped top pair with Q♠3♦, but Ketola smashed the Q♦10♣9♦ flop even harder, with 10♥9♣.
The 4♥ on the turn was a blank, and there was already $2 million in the pot by the time the 3♠ hit the river.

Antonius bet $1.6 million on the end, Ketola snap-called, and suddenly Antonius had moved ahead in the match.
From there they traded pots back and forth for hours on end. Then, as is often the case in poker, a couple of key hands brought the match to a swift end.
The Cooler & The Decisive All-In
In the first of the two aforementioned showdowns, Antonius kicked things off with a limp from the button holding K♦9♠. Ketola raised to $350,000 with Q♥9♥ and Antonius called. Ketola got an absolute dream flop of Q♠J♥8♥, giving him top pair and a straight flush draw.
He checked and Antonius bet $175,000. Ketola check-raised to $525,000, and Antonius eventually called. The turn was an absolute disaster for Antonius, as the 10♥ gave Ketola his straight flush while making him a king-high straight.

After check-raising the flop, Ketola checked again, having made his hand. Antonius bet $625,000, and Ketola unleashed the double check-raise, making it $1.6 million. Antonius called, and the river was the 3♣.
Ketola immediately jammed all-in, and Antonius, with just over $4 million behind, went into the tank. After more than two minutes, Antonius let it go.
After making that big fold, Antonius quickly found an opportunity to double his way back into the match. Ketola opened to $250,000 with K♣J♣ from the button and Antonius three-bet to $850,000 with A♦K♦. Ketola jammed, and Antonius called all-in for just over $4 million. A win would bring him back to over $8 million, far closer to the $10 million he started with.
The Q♠9♠5♣ kept Antonius ahead, but added four outs to Ketola’s match-winning possibilities. The J♠ turn made Ketola an 84% favorite, leaving Antonius in need of an ace or a ten on the end. The river 7♣ secured the victory for Ketola, wrapping up the biggest heads-up match of his life.
After winning three out of four matches against Wiktor ‘Limitless’ Malinowski earlier in the series, Ketola is now up $16 million on the trip, pending any further heads-up action.
