The $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2017 World Series of Poker drew a field of 399 entrants, creating a total prize pool of $1,077,300. After three days of play, it was 34-year-old poker pro Matthew Schreiber who came out on top, earning his first gold bracelet and the $256,226 first-place prize.

Perhaps the most incredible thing about the Mission Viejo, California-native’s victory is that he admitted that he’s isn’t much of a stud or stud eight-or-better player, having seen less than 100 hands of either variation before entering the tournament.

“I kind of just learned on the fly to be honest,” said Schreiber. “Day 1 was just a huge learning experience and I was just accumulating more and more knowledge on the fly, at least as far as the studs go. I kind of was figuring things out and it just worked out for me.”

The final table featured notables such as Brendan Taylor (8th), Ryan Hughes (7th), Tom Koral (4th), David Steicke (3rd) and Phillip Hui (2nd). Other recognizable names that made the money included Mike Matusow (11th), Don Zewin (15th), Tom McCormick (19th), Brandon Cantu (23rd), Shaun Deeb (26th), Mark Gregorich (27th), John Cernuto (30th), and Scotty Nguyen (35th).

Here’s a look at the final table results.
