Normandie Casino and the B or Better Foundation wish its essay scholarship winners and applicants good luck as they prepare to start the next chapter of their lives attending universities and colleges this fall. Normandie Casino and the B or Better Foundation kicked off the summer with a Scholarship Awards Dinner to celebrate their annual essay contest winners and awarded over $3,000 to the applicants of this year’s scholarship contest. The B or Better Foundation and Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 by Normandie Casino Matriarch, Mary Ellen Miller, and were designed to encourage educational achievement for Normandie Casino employees, their families, and local high school students. Normandie Casino rewards its employees with $100 for every “B” or better they receive in any scholastic class from an established educational institution. At the end of the school year, the B or Better Foundation matches those funds to distribute to selected students from local high school seniors and children of Normandie Casino employees.
This year, Normandie had eight applicants respond to its essay contest topic: “of everything in the world, what would you most like to be doing right now? Where would you most like to be? Who, would you most like to be with? (Could be living or not).” The applicants came from the local high schools, the Gardena Police Explorers program and children of Normandie’s employees. Matching the funds Normandie had given to its employees throughout the year, the B or Better Foundation awarded $250.00, $750.00 and $2,000.00 for the top three essays by Carlos Gutierrez, Edward Pedroza, and Alexis Bagby. Furthermore, Normandie donated additional funds to the B or Better Foundation so that it could reward $50 to every student who applied to use towards their continuing education.
