The team at CoinPoker put together a very special pot-limit Omaha cash game, with several top regulars battling in $200-$400 with $200 ante four-max tables. Dirk ‘venividi1993’ Gerritse, ‘yolof1,’ ‘Giselle54,’ and Jared ‘Theblez’ Bleznick played one table each of pot-limit Omaha, 5-card pot-limit Omaha, and 6-card pot-limit Omaha.
Gerritse and Bleznick came out the big winners, with Gerritse enjoying a $150,000 win at the PLO5 table. He won two of the biggest pots played at that table, both totaling around $170,000.
Backdoor Straight Allows Gerritse to Crack Top Set
Gerritse and Giselle54 were more than $80,000 deep when Giselle54 opened for $1,400 under the gun. Gerritse called in the small blind.
They went heads up to A♥K♠9♦, and Giselle54 continued for $3,000. Gerritse made it $8,000, and Giselle54 called. The turn was the 2♠, and Gerritse check-called pot, $20,000. On the 4♦ river, Gerritse check-called the remaining $55,800, creating a pot of $171,600.
Giselle54 showed A♣A♦J♣6♦5♣ for top set, but Gerritse held A♠J♥8♥5♠3♦ for a wheel.

Hand Analysis
Usually, calling a lot of opens out of the small blind isn’t advised in most PLO formats. However, this one has a big ante, so the players are more incentivized to get in the mix, and Gerritse has a decent double-suited hand with nut potential.
Everyone else gets out of the way, and Gerritse opts for an interesting check-raise bluff after making top pair with a bunch of backdoors. These sorts of plays are often done with a pair in hand in regular PLO, since it’s hard to improve and the hand has good blockers to opponent value holdings.
In PLO5, top pair with a bevy of backdoors is a similar hand, and it’s important to remember that since the value threshold goes up, the bluffing range is going to include better hands like this one.
Giselle54 probably doesn’t want to play many bet-three-bets, since that would only serve to chase away bluffs and weaker hands. So, the players see a turn, and Gerritse finds one of his best cards, picking up a combo draw. Top pair and a mediocre draw isn’t good enough to profitably bet-call against value, so he switches gears and checks. He could potentially beat some bluffs like a king with a combo draw, so check-calling is much better than bet-calling.
The river brings home Gerritse’s nut straight, but there are only two likely situations in play. Either his opponent has a big set and will jam for value, or he has a bluff. Checking induces a perfectly reasonable value-jam, especially since Giselle54 has a straight blocker.
Gerritse Hits Miracle Backdoor Flush
In this hand, Bleznick opened for $1,400 under the gun from a stack of $84,700, and the other three players called, including Gerritse in the big blind with a stack that covered everyone.
On the J♦9♠5♥, Bleznick bet $4,800 after the blinds checked. Only Gerritse called. The turn was the 2♥, and Bleznick bet $12,000. Gerritse potted $52,000, and Bleznick called, leaving $26,500 back. Gerritse put that in on the 6♥ river, and Bleznick called off.
Bleznick had K♠Q♥J♥10♥9♥ for a backdoor flush, but it was no good, as Gerritse pipped him with K♥Q♠10♦9♣7♥. He won the $173,000 pot.

Hand Analysis
Bleznick opens with a hand that makes a bunch of nut straights, which gain a ton of value in PLO5, since a straight is very frequently present. Gerritse has a similar holding and a good multi-way defend.
Bleznick flops top two and a wrap and makes a continuation-bet, driving out two of his opponents. Gerritse calls in the big blind. Raising would be a nice play with a little more absolute hand value, such as two pair with the wrap.
The turn brings in Gerritse’s flush draw, and he goes for a check-jam, since he now has a set blocker with a massive draw. He won’t run into a set as often with a nine in his hand, and even if he does, he’ll improve often enough to make getting in a good play.
Bleznick makes a bit of an odd call, but he does have a hand that really doesn’t care much what the river is. He’s not folding regardless of what falls, and he may have been looking to induce Hail Mary river bluffs from missed draws.
Gerritse runs into the one hand that has him in somewhat bad shape, as he can only scoop with a river heart, but he finds the miracle five-outer.
