A new poker film will look at female card players. The production, Quads & The Kicker, is described as a “neo-noir thriller” based on the off-Broadway play, “Never the Same Rhyme Twice.”

Set to star include Kelly Marie Tran (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”), Ashley Reyes (“Walker”), and Jamie Neumann (“The Deuce”).

Ranch Productions is producing the movie, but the crew hasn’t announced a release date. Award-winning screenwriter Heidi James wrote the script and is directing the movie.

“Set within the shadowy world of female poker grifters and featuring original songs, the movie follows a once-loyal sisterhood as shifting alliances – and a triple-con – fracture the bond that once held them together,” Deadline wrote of the film.

Dark Comedy & Drama

The original 2014 play by Andy Rooster Bloch features four con-women playing poker who confront each other with sharp dialogue, guns, and revenge, “blending dark comedy and drama,” according to the screenplay’s listing on Original Works Online.

For the film version, production is currently underway in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Focusing on female players brings something new to the poker film genre. Most films tend to focus on male players.

Billionaire businessman Dean Stoecker is serving as executive producer. He said the film is the type of production he wants to be involved with.

“This marks our second film under the Ranch Productions banner,” said Stoecker. “We’re drawn to visceral, unique, hybrid-genre projects like “Quads & The Kicker” and have an exciting slate to follow.”

Hollywood has featured poker in several productions over the last few years. “Dead Money” with Emile Hirsch debuted in 2024. The screenwriter spoke with CardPlayer about the film. “The Card Counter” was also released in 2021.

In December, the creators of “Rounders” announced a new Netflix series, with director Martin Scorsese focusing on the modern world of Las Vegas casinos. Scorsese’s original “Casino” celebrated the film’s 30-year anniversary in 2025.
