‘GucciNIKE’ Finally Lands $1.8 Million Counterpunch On ‘Giselle54’ In High Stakes PLO Match

CoinPoker PLO Heads-Up Match Gets Spicy

Until the past few days, it seemed like ‘Giselle54‘ could do no wrong at the CoinPoker high-stakes pot-limit Omaha tables. The anonymous high-stakes crusher’s incredible run finally hit a rut, though. ‘GucciNIKE‘ dealt them back-to-back losses of high six figures on Nov. 3-4, winning approximately $1.8 million.

Their play has come primarily at $500-$1,000 with a $200 ante tables. Giselle54 had been on an upswing of almost $3 million in their prior sessions.

GucciNIKE had come close to taking advantage of some missteps by Giselle54, but the deck wouldn’t cooperate. In the most recent two sessions, though, the cards have begun falling GucciNIKE’s way a bit more.

Big Bluff Catch From GucciNIKE

At 100-big blind stacks, GucciNIKE raised to $3,000 on the button, and Giselle54 made it $9,000. GucciNIKE called.

After the QJ5 flop, Giselle54 continued for $9,170. GucciNIKE raised to $22,500. Giselle54 called, bringing a 5 that both players checked. The river was the 5. Giselle54 bet $39,000 and GucciNIKE called.

Giselle54 had AK107, playing ace high. GucciNIKE took the $141,400 pot with 101084 for a full house.

Hand Analysis

Giselle54 makes a pretty aggressive three-bet with a hand that normally fits better into the calling range due to its weaker suits. Essentially, the big blind needs at least a king-high suit here to three-bet profitably.

On the flop, Giselle54 doesn’t have a great hand to bet with, either. On a two-tone board, wraps that don’t block pairs and don’t have any flush draw blockers will face a decent number of raises. That’s an ugly spot, so these hands do a lot of checking since they can comfortably call a bet.

Giselle54 goes for the bet, though, and GucciNIKE makes an interesting small raise. Their combo has some good properties for bluffing the flop despite not blocking any pairs themselves. The 10s block some continues, as do the backdoor clubs. Having a spade is nice as well. The key is that this hand doesn’t have enough equity to call, and it doesn’t mind folding to a three-bet.

Once the turn pairs the board, GucciNIKE could bet very small, around 20% of the pot. They represented hands on the flop that would frequently turn full houses, so there’s no need to bet big. Checking is fine as well, especially with bad blockers.

Things always get a little weird on trips boards in PLO. Giselle54 has the range advantage, especially having lots A-A and K-K combos after three-betting preflop. They opt for a pretty big bet that’s a little shy of pot. The K is good for bluffing since they want to block K-K, but the 10 is bad since it blocks straight draws. Not having spades is quite nice, however, and that might be the most important factor.

For a lot of the same reasons, GucciNIKE has a pretty iffy bluff-catching candidate. However, if Giselle54 blasts all of these high-card hands, then going for it with the weak full house is probably okay.

Nut Blocker Doesn’t Work for Giselle54

The players were deep for this hand, playing 186 big blinds. GucciNIKE raised to $3,000 and called a three-bet to $9,000 from Giselle54 again.

A monotone flop of J65 hit, and Giselle54 bet $4,000. GucciNIKE called. Giselle54 checked the A, and GucciNIKE bet $7,902. Giselle54 called. On the 7 river, Giselle54 checked. GucciNIKE potted for $42,144. Giselle54 shoved for $165,046 effective.

GucciNIKE called, and Giselle54 showed AJ106 for two pair. GucciNIKE had K998 for a flush, good for the $372,297 pot.

Hand Analysis

Again, Giselle54 three-bets a hand that’s too wide, especially at deeper stacks. Hands that make the nuts go up in value as stacks get deeper, while hands that make mediocre holdings like jack-high flushes lose value.

GucciNIKE calls, and the flop action is standard with a small bet and a call. The big blind has the nut advantage on these monotone boards after three-betting.

Giselle54 blocks the weaker hands that would call a small bet on the turn since they have the top three board pairs. They could check-raise facing a small bet and simply start using the nut blocker to represent an ace-high flush. They decided to call, however, setting up a river situation where they could shove all in if faced with a pot-sized bet.

That’s exactly what happens, and GucciNIKE has to decide how often Giselle54 has the nut blocker and how often they have the nuts. Most nut flushes would want to get more money in on the turn, so it’s pretty suspicious that Giselle54 would just check-call a small bet. A hand with both the As and the Ks, plus a third spade, might be a good example of such a hand, but GucciNIKE blocks that.

Add in the fact that Giselle54 is clearly three-betting a much wider range than the solver-approved one, and GucciNIKE knows their opponent probably has the bare ace more than they “should.”

Against a normal three-betting range, calling off this many blinds without the nuts is quite uncomfortable, but GucciNIKE assessed the situation correctly and was rewarded with a monster pot.
