The first major poker tournament series of the new year is about to get underway at The Atlantis Resort and Casino in The Bahamas with the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure taking place from January 5-14th.
The PCA has grown into one of the largest and most popular tournament stops of the year, and with forty-one events set to take place this year, the tradition is sure to continue in 2012.
The centerpiece of this tropical tournament festival is the $10,300 Main Event, a seven-day no-limit hold’em tournament, running January 7-13, that is sure to draw a huge turnout. Last year, 1,560 players entered the event, building a massive $15,132,000 prize pool. Eventual champion Galen Hall earned $2.3 million for topping the sizable field.
Some have expressed concern that the field at the PCA might suffer in the wake of poker’s Black Friday. Some early good news is that more than 600 players had already preregistered roughly a week before the Main Event’s start date.
In addition to the Main Event, the PCA will also play host to a number of other sizable buy-in tournaments, including the $100,000 Super High Roller, which kicks off on January 5th. This event premiered last year, with thirty-eight players ponying up the six-figure buy-in to create a $3,743,000 prize pool. Eugene Katchalov defeated Daniel Negreanu heads-up for the inaugural title and $1.5 million in prize money.
There will also be a $25,000 High Roller no-limit hold’em event, where last year’s champ Will Molson will try to extend his impressive record of three years in a row of finishing second or better in this event.
In addition to standard, full-ring no-limit hold’em, the PCA will also play host to a variety of other games and formats, including a $5,000 pot-limit Omaha eight-handed championship, a $5,000 eight-game championship and much more.
