There were some big shake ups this week in the 2016 Card Player Player of the Year race. Here is a look at the events that most impacted the standings:
WPT bestbet Jacksonville $25,000 High Roller
A $25,000 no-limit hold’em high roller event was added to the tournament schedule at the 2016 World Poker Tour bestbet Bounty Scramble this past week. A total of 19 entries were made in the event, building a prize pool of $456,000.
In the end Chance Kornuth emerged victorious, capturing his third title of the year at his 12th final table. For the win Kornuth earned $186,672 after making a deal with Sam Soverel heads-up. Kornuth also added 420 Player of the Year points, bringing his totals on the year to 4,794 points and $2,279,017 in earnings so far. As a result Kornuth has climbed into third place on the POY leader board.
Soverel, who was at his ninth final table of the year, earned $178,128 and 350 POY points for his latest deep run. The cash-game pro ahs had a breakout year on the tournament circuit, highlighted by winning his first WSOP gold bracelet in a $1,000 pot-limit Omaha tournament. With 4,165 points and $1,444,522 in year-to-date earnings he has moved into seventh place in the overall standings.
WPT bestbet Jacksonville Bounty Scramble Main Event
The 2016 World Poker Tour bestbet Bounty Scramble $5,000 no-limit hold’em main event drew a total of 379 entries to build a final prize pool of $1,762,350.
In the end Sam Panzica came out on top, earning his first WPT title, the top prize of $354,335 and 1,200 POY points. This was his sixth final table finish and third title of 2016, having won both a €10,300 high roller at the European Poker Tour Dublin festival and the 2016 Florida State Poker Championship $1,500 main event. With 3,383 total points and $1,001,908 in year-to-date earning Panzica has climbed into 17th place in the overall POY standings.
Third-place finisher Ankush Mandavia also made a move to join the top 20 in the POY standings as a result of this event. He earned $152,766 and 800 points for his latest deep run. Mandavia has now made six final tables in 2016, including a title run in the $5,000 turbo no-limit hold’em event at this years WSOP for his first gold bracelet, the top prize of $548,139 and a whopping 1,680 POY points. With 3,176 points earned and $1,547,456 in year-to-date scores he now sits in 20th place in the rankings.
