There has been pressure from some big names, including the mayor of Philadelphia, for a project to finally get the green light. Though, some are still opposing a second casino. SugarHouse Casino, which just opened its poker room, said it is worried about the market being over-saturated.
SugarHouse Casino is the only casino within city limits.
The state’s Gaming Control Board indicated that it will pick a project during its meeting next week. Currently, four competing projects are on the table.
According to the report, sources said the favorite seems to be Live! Hotel & Casino, which is a joint venture of Cordish Cos. and Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment. The proposed location is Packer Avenue and Darien Street in South Philadelphia.
The actual breaking of ground for a new casino in Philadelphia could be delayed even after a winner is picked. Apparently, the Gaming Control Board is anticipating getting sued over the casino issue. The winning developer would likely wait until the courts resolve the matter.
In other words, the opening of a second Philly casino might still be years away.
Other casinos are located just outside of the city.
