Poker pro Humberto Brenes is so far having a stellar World Series of Poker. The 63-year-old grinder had seven cashes at the 2014 WSOP as of Saturday afternoon, putting him on pace to break the record of 11 that was set by Konstantin Puchkov in 2012.
The WSOP has been running annually since 1970. Though, over the past 14 years the number of events on the summer schedule has gone from 25 to 65. The poker boom changed the face of the WSOP.
Brenes has cashed in a ton of events, but he has yet to make a final table. He closest call was in the super tough event no. 28 ($10,000 pot-limit hold’em championship), in which he finished 14th.
On June 13 of last year, Dan Kelly had six cashes, which put him on pace for the record. However, he slowed down and ended the 2013 WSOP with eight cashes.
Trailing Brenes this year in number of cashes so far are six players with five apiece. Two of those six are stars Erik Seidel and Nick Schulman.
Brenes has two career WSOP bracelets and has cashed 79 times lifetime, which puts him tied for third with Men Nguyen. Seidel is second lifetime with 86. Everyone trails Phil Hellmuth and his 103 cashes, three of which have come this summer, so far.
