One of the Greatest High-Stakes Cash Game Players Passes On
Chip ReeseDavid "Chip" Reese, the three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, longtime cash-game star, and member of the Poker Hall of Fame, has died. He was 56.

Card Player has learned that Reese went to the hospital last night with symptoms of pneumonia but was then sent home later that night and passed away in his sleep. Card Player's original information reported that he had died at the hospital.

Reese, the Ohio native who learned to play poker while attending Dartmouth, was a regular in the biggest cash games and was considered the best seven-card stud player in the world. Doyle Brunson held Reese's play in such high regard that he pegged him to pen the chapter on stud for his book "Super System."

He affirmed his position as one of the world's best all-around players in 2006 when he won the $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event ($1.8 million). He also won bracelets in 1982 and 1978 ($5,000 limit stud and $1,000 stud split).

Please check back with CardPlayer.com for more information when further details become available.

I am a no name 2-5 grinder in Bellagio. Secretly I've always been Chip's biggest fan, always admired him for never steaming, and to be able to make the correct decision no matter the circumstances. I can't count how many times I said silently to myself, what would chip do? Say nice hand sir and mean it. Not to mention the tremendous grace in which he carried himself. Never had the courage to say hi and shake his hand. Chip you were the best on and off the felt.

Chip was one of the most stand up guys in poker. He personified class, probably the most class of any poker player that has played the game. The game will not be the same without you Chip. My prayers and thoughts go out to the entire Reese family.

An amazing person to watch through the years. A true class act, one that always showed character at the table, which seems to be missing from the tables these days. My heart, thoughts, & prayers go out to his family and friends (especially Doyle who is probably devasted).

He played with style and let his game do his talking. I wish some of the younger players would follow his lead. He was a fearse player who respected the game and the people who play it.

Chip Reese should be remembered as the embodiment of what is good and right about poker. He was not the emotional, screaming, jump out of your chair and taunt your opponent, type of player. He was a gentleman at all times, mainly because it was good for business. All of us who play the game should strive to act as he did and respect the game and all of the people who play it. None of us will ever play the game as well as he did, but we can strive to play the game in the same manner. My sympathies to his family and friends. I only wish I could have sat at the same table with him just once.

The general public knows so little about him. I hope, ZK, that books will be written about him by those who knew him best, a champion until the end.
