Czech high roller and online poker pro Michael Sklenička is no stranger to running deep in big spots. However, he’s probably not accustomed to winning tournaments in the unconventional manner he won the $10,000 Wynn Summer Classic Championship, earning more than $2.3 million.
On Wednesday afternoon, he knocked out the final two opponents in the same hand after hitting running cards to make quad eights. The hand secured him the trophy, a career-best score, and the top spot in the 1,537-entry field.
One-Outer Quads To Ship The Title
With the blinds at 300,000-600,000 with a 600,000 big blind ante, Sklenička, who had about 60 million in chips, jammed for 9.8 million effective on the button
with 8♠7♣.
Jun Obara, with 9.8 million in the small blind, called with K♠K♦. Daniel Rezaei found 10♦10♣ in the big blind and called off his last 5 million.
The flop was K♥7♥8♦, giving Obara a 96.12% chance to win the hand, according to the Card Player poker odds calculator. Sklenička’s odds to win were just 0.22%.
The turn was the 8♥, which eliminated Rezaei and improved Obara to 98%. Sklenička was drawing to just one out.
The river was the 8♣, which gave Sklenička the outright title in the most unlikely way.
