Paul Worsley topped a record field of 12,961 entries in the £200 buy-in no-limit hold’em GOLIATH event Grosvenor Casino Coventry in his home country of England.

The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the Liverpool resident, who might have strayed from bankroll management guidelines a bit by entering this event.

“I can’t believe I’ve won, to be honest. I’m speechless,” Worsley told a reporter for the venue after coming out on top. “I’ve got £600 in me bank.”

Worsely was awarded £316,640 as the champion, which amounts to $421,131 in USD. This was the largest score yet for Worsely, who also finished 13th in GUKPT event in Blackpool a decade ago.

This event drew the largest field of any live poker tournament ever held outside of Las Vegas. It was up 10.3 percent over the 11,749 turnout of 2024.

Worsley overcome a big chip deficit heads-up to secure the title. After deal negotiations amongst the final three contenders fell apart, Thomas Clack’s QJ won a three-way showdown against the 99 of Vasilica Luca and AQ of Worsley, with a jack on the river ending Luca’s run in third place ($192,584).  With that, Clack took a sizable lead into the final showdown. Worsley soon spun up his stack, though, and soon edged into the lead.

The last hand of the tournament saw Clack rip from the button holding 97. Worsley called with 109 and held through a J93A10 runout, making tens up to win the pot and the title.

Clack was awarded $289,275 as the runner-up, a new top score for the 145th-place finisher in the 2023 World Series of Poker main event. The UK resident’s earnings grew to $718,000 thanks to this deep run.
