Three starting flights at the Mid-States Poker Tour’s second stop of 2023 built a field of 900 entries (the largest major main event in Colorado history) at Bally’s Black Hawk in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and 108 players returned for day 2 on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The last man standing at the end of play was Nick Barksdale, and he was awarded the biggest score of his career for $170,325 in prize money. The sales manager from Lincoln, Nebraska also took home his first MSPT title, and his career earnings now stand at $256,712.

The $1,110 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament had a prize pool worth $873,000. The top 90 players all cashed for at least $2,270 in prize money.

The final table played late into the night, with Barksdale claiming the top prize a little after 1 am for the hard-fought victory. “It feels great, I feel a lot of respect for the opponents that I played with, and it was nice to take it down. It was a very tough final table, it was really anybody’s game going into it, and it was good. I got it to heads-up and felt pretty confident in my game, the gentleman I played heads up was a really good player, but the ball bounced my way so I feel fortunate,” said Barksdale to the MSPT reporters after the victory.

Barksdale defeated Jared Ingles in the heads-up final with K-7 topping A-9 on the final hand when Barksdale found another king and seven on the flop. The runner-up originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana added $104,762 to his career earnings that now stand at $1,735,998.

A few other notables that cashed in the event included Ashley Warren (10th), Tyler Jankanish (13th), DJ Buckley (16th), Adrian Buckley (18th), Michael Giardina (31st), Ruth Graham (55th), DJ Alexander (58th), Michael Rankins (66th), Jonathan Dull (67th), Brent Vaughn (85th), Renato Spahiu (87th), and Quentin Yanick (90th).
