ClevelandThe state of Ohio has seen over 1,000 businesses apply for a license to offer retail sports betting on college and professional contests.

According to a report from Cleveland.com, things are heating up in the Buckeye State ahead of Jan. 1, 2023, when sports betting will begin.

Physical sportsbooks and kiosks will be available in bars, restaurants and bowling alleys. Ohio is one of the largest untapped sports betting markets in the country.

Under the new law, the Ohio Lottery is regulating the kiosks. The Ohio Casino Control Commission controls the online sports betting regulation. The state is expected to see at least 10 sports betting apps.

According to the report, the establishment looking for a betting kiosk license must apply by Aug. 15. Businesses will pay taxes to the state.

Ohio legalized sports betting in 2019 after a multi-year debate.
