Brick-and-mortar casinos in Atlantic City have recorded a rare year-over-year gain in gaming win, but it may be a sign of things to come.
According to figures from state regulators, the seven casinos in the seaside gambling town won a combined $185.9 million during the month, up six percent compared to the $175.5 million won by the industry in January 2016.
The results were even better when adding in online gaming and excluding the Trump Taj Mahal, which closed its doors on Oct. 10 without any official plans to reopen. Total gaming win from the currently open casinos increased 15 percent to $204.7 million last month, the state said.
A record $18.8 million was won from online gambling last month. Internet gaming win increased 28.6 percent year-over-year. Online poker revenue grew nearly nine percent to $2.33 million. So the other online casino games carried the way with their revenue growing 32 percent year-over-year.
For the month of January 2017, total gaming taxes were $16.5 million. Total gaming taxes are eight percent of taxable casino gross revenue and 15 percent of internet gaming gross revenue.
The strong January for the casinos on the brick-and-mortar side of things was thanks to the table games. Revenue from them was about $63 million last month, up more than 18 percent year-over-year. Slot machine win grew less than one percent year-over-year to $123.7 million.
The city’s overall poker market was $5.7 million in January.

The casinos last year won a total of $2.6 billion from gamblers, an increase of 1.55 percent over 2015 and the first year-over-year gain for the industry since 2005-06.
