GucciNIKE Schools Kayhan Mokri In 5-Card PLO For More Than $350,000

At $500-$1,000 Stakes, The Two Traded Several Six-Figure Pots

Arguably the best pot-limit Omaha player on the planet continues to prove their dominance, as ‘GucciNIKE‘ took on high-stakes tournament wizard Kayhan ‘KayhanMok’ Mokri in a session of 5-card PLO and came out with a big win. They played $500-$1,000 ($200 ante) on Friday, and GucciNIKE pocketed a win of roughly $360,000 on CoinPoker.

Mokri and GucciNIKE played multiple $200,000-plus pots, including one pot that exceeded $400,000. GucciNIKE used a strong out-of-position checking range in multiple spots to lure Mokri into river jams that simply fed GucciNIKE stacks when they held the nuts.

Mokri Bluff-Shoves the River in Four-Bet Pot

Mokri was on the button and opened to $3,000 when the players were 200 blinds deep. GucciNIKE made it $9,000, and Mokri four-bet to $27,000. GucciNIKE called.

The flop came K♠Q♦8♣, and both players checked, bringing the 4♥. GucciNIKE bet $40,800, and Mokri called. On the J♦ river, GucciNIKE checked. Mokri jammed for $132,744 effective, and GucciNIKE called.

Mokri showed 9♣8♠7♦6♦5♠. GucciNIKE held A♣K♥Q♠10♥4♣ for the nut straight. They scooped a $401,488 pot.

Hand Analysis

GucciNIKE three-bets a premium double-suited hand with four Broadway cards, only to face a four-bet here. It’s a clear call, but Mokri’s decision to four-bet is interesting. It’s not a recommended play at lower stack depths, but mixing these double-suited rundowns into the four-betting range can provide the player with some board coverage.

In 5-card PLO, equities run closer in general, so aces go down in value. However, the hands that go up in value usually make strong straights and flushes, because it’s easier to make them. The middle rundowns aren’t quite as good as they often look, because it’s harder to win with two pair, lower straights, and trips compared with regular PLO, where those hands win showdowns regularly.

In any case, the four-bet pot brings a flop that heavily favors the out-of-position player. GucciNIKE will have more strong sets and two pair in a four-bet pot, so leading is certainly an option with top two.

Mokri could start bluffing the flop, since this hand wouldn’t really be sad about bet-folding, but he opts to see a turn for free and picks up a wrap. On a rainbow board, that’s easily enough to call a big bet.

The river gives GucciNIKE the nuts, but they decide to check. Mokri has a zero-showdown hand but also lacks blockers to the nut straight. It’s probably going to be better to just bluff with some percentage of aces on the river, so using this hand as a jam is an extremely risky play and likely exploitable by the opponent. Mokri winds up sending a 200 blinds over with a hand that was probably an overly ambitious bluff.

Mokri Jams With King-High Flush Blocker

With 100-blind stacks, GucciNIKE potted in the big blind after Mokri opened on the button, so they went to the flop for $9,000 apiece.

GucciNIKE bet $9,200 on the Q♥3♣2♣ flop, and Mokri called. GucciNIKE checked the 10♣ and called $18,400. On the A♠ river, GucciNIKE checked and called the last $63,200.

Mokri showed K♦K♣5♦3♠2♥ for two pair. GucciNIKE took the $200,000 pot with A♣K♥10♥7♦4♣ for the nuts.

Hand Analysis

The flop is a good one for GucciNIKE’s three-betting range. It should usually miss Mokri, and it will give GucciNIKE a lot of top set, combo draws, and overpairs with flush draws. Betting half-pot is good, and Mokri has a clear continue with bottom two pair and the K♣.

The turn gives GucciNIKE the nuts, and there’s a mechanic in PLO that the player making the nut flush usually wants to play aggressively when their second flushing card is low. That opens up a lot of the other strong flushes as calling hands.

However, GucciNIKE opts to check. If they have a read that Mokri is bluffing too liberally in position, this might be a profitable adjustment to the opponent.

Mokri bets the turn with two pair and a flush blocker, which is an appropriate bluffing hand. The hand has little value, won’t improve very often, and has a key blocker. Mokri follows through on the brick river, and the bluff should usually get sets and some weaker flushes to fold. Unblocking the most likely sets is ideal from his standpoint.

Unfortunately for Mokri, GucciNIKE had been setting the trap, and the bluff, though quite reasonable, costs him a stack.
