2001 was another good year for Card Player. Annually, we always strive to have a stronger group of columnists at the end of the year than at the beginning of the year. That goal was accomplished again this year.
The year was highlighted by the return of Linda Johnson, who is probably more knowledgeable about the current state of poker than any other person.
Warren Karp joined us to write strategy for new players, and Jim Brier writes an incredibly informative hold'em strategy column that is generally suitable for midlimit players. Johnny Chan and Daniel Negreanu now give us a variety of anecdotal columns that draw upon their experience in the poker world.
Dan Kimberg is another new columnist who can write as well as play. His book Serious Poker does a great job of putting things in perspective for the newer player. And Greg Dinkin writes a unique column dealing with poker principles and the business world.
Cowboy Wolford, who has been around since the good old days, now regales us with stories of his colorful past on the rodeo circuit as well as at the poker table.
Our most recent addition, Adam Schoenfeld, a retired Internet business genius, has begun to provide a witty chronicle of his first year as a tournament poker professional. He definitely is given my Rookie of the Year award, culminating his first year with a third-place finish recently in the U.S. Poker Championship final event to take home $68,000.
Of course, these "rookies" join a group of columnists who are also world-class champions. I will say that I know of no other magazine in any sport/game whatsoever that has such a strong group of world champions on its staff. We are honored to be associated with champions such as Phil Hellmuth, T.J. Cloutier, Mike Sexton, Tom McEvoy, Vince Burgio and Steve Badger.
And even Rich Korbin and I won championships this year. It was a very good year for the "players" of Card Player.
And let's not forget our senior columnist Roy Cooke and our other top-flight veterans: Bob Ciaffone, Barry and Brian Mulholland, Mike O'Malley, I. Nelson Rose, Chuck Sippl, Dana Smith, Yolanda and Roger Roche, Mike Cappelletti, Johnny Hale, Max Shapiro, Roy West, Michael Wiesenberg, and Rick Young, as well as our regional gaming news specialists Bob Delisle and Ron Koziol.
