Senate Wants Information From The NBA On Betting Controversies

Committee Wants All Documents Related To Any League Investigation About Sports Betting Accusations

In March 2005, Congress hauled several high-profile Major League Baseball players and executives to the Capitol to answer questions about the alleged steroid use in the game.

The NBA might have a similar moment with its gambling issues.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Monday. The lawmakers asked to see more details on the NBA’s gambling policy and any ongoing investigations.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) chairs the committee, which oversees pro sports in the U.S. According to the letter, the committee is concerned about possible integrity issues and corruption involving game outcomes.

“The integrity of NBA games must be trustworthy and free from the influence of organized crime or gambling-related activity,” the committee said in the letter. “Sports betting scandals like this one may lead the American public to assume that all sports are corrupt.”

Committee Wants More Info On Rozier Investigation

In the letter, the committee sought documents on any investigations related to players, coaches, owners, or general managers since 2020. Committee members also want any communication between the league and integrity monitoring services about suspicious bets.

The Senate request for information comes after Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA journeyman and Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones were recently arrested.

Federal investigators believe Rozier was part of an illegal sports wagering scheme that funneled inside information to gamblers. His indictment alleges he removed himself from at least one game early to benefit bettors.

On the other hand, the FBI alleges Billups was part of an operation that rigged poker games to cheat unsuspecting high-stakes gamblers out of millions. However, authorities believe Jones was involved in both schemes.

The Senate request is more focused on Rozier and the sports betting operation. They want any information on the league’s investigation of the 10-year veteran. In 2023, the league cleared Rozier to play after a sports betting-related investigation.

NBA Cleared Rozier Of Prior Sports Betting Allegations

In a recent interview with Amazon Prime, Silver expressed shock at learned of the recent arrests.

“My initial reaction was that I was deeply disturbed,” he said. “There’s nothing more important to the league and fans than the integrity of its competitions.”

Silver was adamant that the league thoroughly investigated Rozier and found no wrongdoing. He added that Rozier cooperated with the investigation, gave the league his phone to review, and agreed to an interview.

“What happened was because bets were placed through legal betting companies, they picked up aberrational behavior around a particular game in March of ’23,” said Silver. “That was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies. We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we frankly couldn’t find anything.”

The commissioner said federal law enforcement agencies have powers that the league doesn’t have. Thus, they can look into the issue deeper if necessary. The senators are now asking for the specifics of the case and the league’s investigation.

“This Committee needs to understand the specifics of the NBA’s investigation and why Rozier was cleared to continue playing basketball,” the committee wrote.
