2014 CarbonPoker Card Player Player of the Year Update — Jake Schindler and Doug Polk Climb

Despite being a relatively quite week on tournament circuit, there was some movement in the standings of the 2014 Card Player Player of the Year race, sponsored by CarbonPoker. Here is at what’s changed in the past week.

Bellagio $100,000 Super High Roller

Amidst the excitement of the WSOP main event an absolutely massive $100,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em super high roller event went down at the Bellagio with surprisingly little fanfare. A total of 37 players posted the six-figure buy-in, building a total prize pool of $3,663,000.

In the end the last player standing was Doug Polk, a high stakes online cash game player who many around the internet might know at “WGCRider.” For the win Polk earned $1,648,350 and 600 POY points. This was his sixth final table of the year and second title, as the Las Vegas resident was just weeks removed from winning his first WSOP gold bracelet in a $1,000 turbo event for $251,969. Polk has final tabled three super high roller events this year, finishing fifth in another at the Bellagio for $602,910 earlier this summer and fourth at the Aussie Millions in January for $770,130. All told Polk has earned 3,010 POY points this year, moving him into seventh place in the overall standings. His year to date earnings are $3,503,603.

Polk wasn’t the only player to climb in the POY ranks as a result of this event. Jake Schindler finished third for $549,450 and 400 points. This was the fifth major final table that Schindler has made this year, which began in the best way possible when he won the $25,000 high roller at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $1,192,624 and shortly after final tabled a $5,000 no-limit hold’em event at the L.A. Poker Classic.

In addition to this most recent super high roller score, Schindler also finished third in a $3,000 WSOP no-limit hold’em event for $212,373 and placed third in the Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza main event for another $169,857 this summer. As a result of all of these big scores the Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania resident has climbed into second place in the POY race with 3,700 points and year-to-date earnings of $2,156,184.

Latin American Poker Tour Panama

A total of 550 players made their way to the Veneto Hotel in Panama City, Panama and bosted the $1,700 buy-in for the latest Latin American Poker Tour main event.

This solid turnout built a total prize pool of $826,925 with the top 79 players making the money. In the end Fabian Ortiz emerged victorious, taking home $143,930 and 840 points for his second LAPT title, having won the Vina Del Mar main event in Chile back in 2009.

Ortiz, who might be best known to poker fans for his 17th place finish in the 2013 WSOP main event, also final tabled the the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $10,300 main event. He finished eighth for $173,220 and 400 points. As a result of these two scores he now sits in 109th place in the POY rankings with 1,240 points and year-to-date earnings of $317,150.
