Moussa Ahmad Wins $1 Million In Onyx High Roller Series Kickoff Event

Lebanese Player Bests 510-Entry Field In $10,400 Buy-In To Secure His First Seven-Figure Score

The Onyx Super High Roller Series, running Aug. 9-21 at Merit Crystal Cove Hotel in August, kicked off with a bang. The first tournament of the series was the $5 million guaranteed $10,400 buy-in no-limit hold’em GG Million$ event. It drew 510 entries across two starting flights.

After four days of high-stakes action, Lebanon’s Moussa Ahmad emerged victorious with the title and the $1,000,0000 first-place prize.  He defeated Canadian poker pro Jamil Wakil heads-up to secure the trophy.

Ahmad also earned 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was his first POY-qualified score, but it alone was enough to move him within reach of the top 100 in the 2025 POY race standings presented by CoinPoker.

The top 76 finishers all earned a share of the multi-million-dollar prize pool, with big names like Jesse Lonis (76th), Ren Lin (72nd), Aliaksei Boika (58th), Aram Oganyan (55th), Matthew Wantman (49th), reigning World Series of Poker main event champion Michael Mizrachi (38th), Boris Kolev (14th), and Christopher Puetz (11th) all running deep.

Crowning A Champion

The final day began with Wakil in the lead and Ahmad in third chip position among the final nine contenders. Wakil added to his lead early, holding with A-K against the A-Q of Hao Tian (9th – $85,000) to narrow the field to eight. The same clash played out for the next elimination, with Ahmad holding the best of it. Weiran Pu earned $102,000 as the eighth-place finisher. The Chinese bracelet winner now boasts more than $2.7 million in lifetime cashes after this performance.

Orhan Ates (7th – $127,000) and Ohad Geiger (6th – $160,000) then bowed out, leaving just five contenders. The next key clash was a classic race, with Peng Chen’s AQ facing the 99 of Stefan Kiwisch. A nine on the flop and a board-pairing jack on the turn left Chen drawing dead. He earned $212,000 for his efforts.

Krasimir Yankov got the last of his short stack in with K-9 leading the J-9 suited of Ahmad, but a jack on the flop and no further help for Yankov saw the Bulgarian busted in fourth place ($292,000). This score moved his career earnings past the $4.1 million mark.

Kiwisch’s last stand saw his three-bet shove from the big blind over Ahmad’s small blind open. Ahmad called with A5 and was up against A4. The 1073A2 runout gave both players top pair, with Ahmad’s five kicker playing in the end. Kiwisch was awarded $415,000 as the third-place finisher, a career-best live showing for the Austrian.

The Final Battle

Heads-up play began with Ahmad holding nearly a 4:1 chip lead. Wakil doubled up early with trip jacks, but was still trailing when the final hand of the tournament was dealt. With blinds of 200,000-400,000 and a big blind ante of 400,000, Ahmad raised to 1,000,000 on the button with 83. Wakil three-bet to 4,500,000 from the big blind holding 1010. Ahmad called and the flop came out J42. Wakil bet 3,500,000 and Ahmad moved all-in. Wakil went into the tank before making the call for 14,300,000 more. He remained ahead through the K turn, but the 6 river gave Ahmad a winning flush and the title.

Wakil earned $650,000 as the runner-up. This was a new career best payday, topping the $400,000 he earned for a fifth-place showing in a $50,000 Triton Poker event in 2023. He now has more than $4 million in lifetime scores to his name.
