Preflop, final table, five handed, with the blinds at 400,000 and 800,000 and a 100,000 ante, Tran went all-in from the button, and Farber called in the small blind.
Analysis
With 12 big blinds remaining in his stack, action folded to Tran on the button when he woke up with a marginal Ace. Tran made the standard play, moving all-in with his Ace in an effort to capture the 1.7m preflop pot. He still held enough chips to get folds from the players in the blinds, but chipleader Farber woke up with high broadway cards while enjoying a 9:1 chip advantage over Tran. Farber realized Tran would be inclined to go after the blinds with that stack size, and decided his K-Q was well qualified in terms of hand strength considering Tran's predicament. Tran was leading, but the flop was a total disaster for Tran as Farber flopped top pair and an inside straight draw. Tran needed running hearts or a miracle Ace, but he could not redraw and was eliminated in 5th for $2,106,893. This was obviously not the result the start of day chipleader Tran was looking for, but on the heels of a runner up finished in the Seminole 100k high roller (2nd, $526,890,) JC Tran certainly wrapped up 2013 in style after being dormant for the preceding few years. Tran's lifetime casino earnings moved to $10.9m as a result.
