Big Hands:
John Kabbaj Involved in Another Four-Way All In Pot
The action intensified as more than half the starting field has been eliminated during the first five levels. Beginning in round four, tournament players began to get involved in multi-way all in situations, and John Kabbaj was not an exception. In the beginning of the fifth level, Kabbaj was involved in a pot that had the tournament lives of all four of his opponents in jeopardy. Kabbaj ended up with a tiny fraction of the pot when his low draw was counterfeited by a deuce on the turn, but still remains alive.
Barny Boatman’s Stack Doesn’t Entice Hachem
Barny Boatman recently moved to Joe Hachem’s table in the blue section of the Amazon Room. Upon arriving, Boatman took the opportunity to raise Hachem’s big blind. When the action folded to him in the cut-off, Boatman raised to a total of 1,050. After the other players folded, Hachem looked at his hole cards and asked for a count of Boatman’s remaining stack. Upon realizing that Boatman had only 600 in chips behind the bet, Hachem seemed uninterested in calling. “It’s not even worth it,” Hachem said as he mucked his cards.
Chris Ferguson Wins a Pot by Pushing All In
The action folded to the player in the small blind, who raised to 900 total. Chris Ferguson examined his cards and made the call. The flop came J J 8 , and the small blind checked. Ferguson tossed a single yellow 1,000 chip across the line, and the small blind quickly called. The turn brought the 8 , and again the small blind checked. After deliberating, Ferguson pushed his remaining 2,500 into the pot. The small blind carefully studied his hand and the board before mucking his cards.
Erik Seidel Slowly Accumulating Chips
Despite a late start due to tardiness, Erik Seidel has been slowly but surely accumulating chips as the event progresses throughout the day. In one hand, the action folded to the player in the small blind, who completed. Seidel checked his option from the big blind, and the two looked at a flop of Q 10 5 . The small blind bet 600, and Seidel made the call. The dealer put out the 2 on the turn, and this time the small blind checked. Seidel fired out a bet of 1,600, causing the small blind to give up his hand.

End of Day 2
May 31, '08
Day 2 of the $10,000 pot-limit hold’em event has come and gone, and what remains for tomorrow is one of the most talented final tables in recent memory.
The final table bubble was a grueling ordeal lasting three hours, punctuated by two river miracles saving Amit Makhija and Chris Bell from the brink of elimination. Eventually it was John Kabbaj who found himself the bubble boy, his elimination by Nenad Medic setting the stage for tomorrow's final nine.
With twice as many chips as anyone else, Andy Bloch will be the odds-on favorite to take home the first bracelet of 2008. He will be joined at tomorrow’s final table by veterans Kathy Liebert and Mike Sexton, each with one bracelet. Young guns Patrik Antonius, Nenad Medic, Phil Laak, Chris Bell, and internet phenoms Mike Sowers and Amit Makhija will all be looking for their very first World Series of Poker title. Tomorrow, one of these esteemed players will take home nearly $800,000 and a coveted World Series bracelet.
The final table will begin tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Big Hands:
John Kabbaj Eliminated in 10th Place.
A change of luck dealt a fatal blow to John Kabbaj's tournament life during level 22. After facing a raise of 85,000 from Mike Sowers, Kabbaj reraised an additional 200,000. Chris Bell nearly beat him into the pot with his remaining 185,000. After the other players folded, Sowers released his hand. Kabbaj held A A and Bell turned over Q Q , making him a substantial underdog. The flop and turn brought no help, but Bell was saved by the Q on the river. Kabbaj was crippled, left with only around 200,000.
Several hands later, Naned Medic raised to 85,000 from middle position. Kabbaj came over the top for his remaining 173,000, which was called by Medic who showed down Q J . Kabbaj was in the lead with 7 7 . Kabbaj maintained his lead throughout the flop and turn, but the river continued to be unfriendly to John Kabbaj by delivering a straight to Medic.
Kabbaj earned $49,632 for his 10th place finish. The remaining players will now all receive at least $74,448.

Big Hands:
Liebert Crippled After Battle with Mike Sexton
Kathy Liebert took a massive blow by doubling up Mike Sexton. The hand began when Nenad Medic raised to 60,000 from under-the-gun. Immediately next to act, Liebert reraised to 210,000. The action folded to Mike Sexton in the small blind. After pausing for a few moments, Sexton moved all in. Nanet folded, but Liebert called and flipped up KdKs. Sexton turned over a pair of black aces. The K 5 4 3 2 gave Liebert a set of kings but also gave Sexton a wheel straight. Liebert now has less than 400,000, and Sexton is in good shape to reach the final table.
Small Stacks Stay Safe
One feature of the final table has the small stacks of Chris Bell and John Kabbaj sitting next to each other. Their one battle was a mild one, with Kabbaj limping from the small blind and Bell checking. The flop came A 4 K and both players checked. The 7 on the turn brought a 30,000 bet from Kabbaj who took the hand down.
Bloch Adds To His Lead
Andy Bloch took on Mike Sowers in a battle of chip leaders about 15 minutes into the level. Bloch made it 60,000 pre-flop, Sowers called from the button and Patrik Antonius elected to play from the big blind. The flop came down K 4 4 and play was checked to Sowers who bet 115,000 into the 192,000 pot. Antonius stepped aside, while Bloch smooth-called. Both players checked after the 6 came on the turn, and play was checked again when the board double-paired with the K on the river. Bloch showed 9 9 and Sowers mucked, yielding the pot of 422,000 to the chip leader.

Chris Bell - 390,000
Eliminations:
David Benefield
Chris Gildone
Nikolay Evdakov
Ryan Young
Big Hands:
Young Picks Off Limpers
Ryan Young took advantage of rare opportunities early in level 19, when on consecutive hands he picked up pots after a number of players had limped into play. After four players called the 16,000 needed to see the flop, Young led out 45,000 after a flop of 10 Q 4 and went uncontested. On the next hand, three players called an initial raise to 45,000 by Young, and after a flop of 8 8 4 Young led out with a 70,000 bet and again found no takers.
Sexton Makes His Play
Mike Sexton limped from the small blind and Andy Bloch checked, bringing aboard one of the few flops of the level that resulted in the A 6 Qd being fanned out. Sexton led out with a 30,000 bet, which Bloch called. The turn brought the K and checks from both players, and the 10 made it a more intriguing board. Sexton bet out 75,000 and Bloch reluctantly folded. Sexton then revealed the 2 3 for the busted flush draw.
Laak Hams it Up For the Cameras
Phil Laak, after removing his shoes and socks, raised to 41,000 from the cut-off. Chris Gildone. Gildone reraised an additional 103,000, which caused Laak to go into the tank. After deliberating for several minutes, Laak flashed the A and mucked. He then decided that his “chi” was bad and could only be remedied by acquiring larger stacks of chips. He persuaded Patrick Antonius to trade him 200,000 in orange 5,000 chips for eight of his green 25,000 chips.
Nikolay Evdakov Crippled After Bluffing a Missed Draw
Nikolay Evdakov was left with a short stack after losing a sizable pot to John Kabbaj. After all other players folded, Kabbaj raised to 46,000 from the small blind and was called by Evdakov in the big blind. On a flop of J 9 5 , Kabbaj check-called Nikolay’s 40,000 bet. Both players checked the 8 on the turn. Kabbaj continued to check on the 3 , but Evdakov bet 100,000. Kabbaj deliberated and called with A 5 . Evdakov showed T 6 and mucked.
Chris Gildone Eliminated by Phil Laak
After settling his issues with his “chi” Phil Laak resumed accumulating chips. After all other players had folded, Laak completed from the small blind and Chris Gildone checked his option. The A 8 6 flop caused Phil to check. Gildone made a pot bet, and Laak instantly made a pot sized reraise. Chris committed his chips with K 4 , giving him a king-high flush draw. Laak flipped over the 8 6 for bottom two pair. The 5d on the turn and the 9s on the river failed to improve Gildone’s hand, and he was eliminated in 13th place.
Benefield busted
David Benefield ran into a suddenly hot Mike Sexton to have his tournament run end. Sexton raised with pocket kings, Benefield pushed with ace-king, and was unable to hit the outs he needed. Benefield finished in 13th place.
Evdakov Misses His Outs
Nikolay Evdakov made his stand with jack-nine, but on a flop of ace, queen, 10, Nenad Medic had his queen-6 stand up for the win to eliminate Evdakov in 12th place.
Young Misses Out On Final Table
Ryan Young suffered a tough situation against Mike Sexton, which short-stacked him for an eventual showdown with Kathy LIebert. Against Sexton, Young raised to 43,000, before Sexton pushed the stakes to 143,000. Young called and the flop came down K Q 6 . Young checked and Sexton's pot bet was enough to take the chips and leave Young somewhat shy on chips.
A few hands later, Young raised to 180,000 after Liebert had made it 60,000 to go. Liebert made the call, and the flop presented in the form of K J 2 . Young's remaining 60,000 in chips went into the pot and Liebert was quick to call, showing the A 10 . It was a tough situation for Young, who had hit the flop with J J , but the board never paired with the 6 on the turn and 9 on the river. Young placed 11th overall.

David Stroj
Big Hands:
Bell Chows Down
With just 20 minutes remaining before the players made their long anticipated break for dinner, Chris Bell gave tablemate Mike “Sowerss” Sowers something to chew on. The original bettor was Anthony Licastro, who opened from the cut-off for 25,000. Sowers called from the button, and Bell made the call from the small blind, creating a pot of 83,000. Bell checked the 9 7 2 flop and Licastro continued his play with a 50,000 bet. Sowers, who has played the button aggressively through the first two days of the tourney, raised another 100,000 for a pot of 283,000 in chips. That’s when Bell stepped into the fray and check-raised all-in for 352,000. Licastro quickly stepped aside, and Sowers had a decision to make. He eventually folded, preserving his remaining 272,000 in chips.
The Action Continues
While Jennifer Tilly stopped by table 13 to wish Phil Laak good luck, the action continued to mount as the players all vied to move up in the money. Dustin Woolf raised to 21,000 pre-flop from middle position. Next to act, Justin Newton reraised an additional 58,000. Woolf released his hand.
Elezra’s Lead Slipping
After initially raising, Nikolai Evdakov called Eli Elezra’s 80,000 reraise and both players saw a flop of 9 7 6 . Without hesitation, Evdakov pushed in his remaining 142,000 into the pot. Elezra pondered for close to five minutes before commenting that he put Evdakov on two 10s and folded A K face up.
Andy Bloch Dominates
Andy Bloch became one of the tournament leaders thanks to two back to back hands. In the first, Mike Sowers pushed in a 130,000 bet after being checked to by Bloch on a board of K Q J 9 6 . Bloch announced a call instantly as Sowers pushed his bet into the pot. Caught in a bluff, Sowers mucked his hand. While dragging the pot, Bloch flipped over the Q T c. On the next hand, Andy Bloch eliminated David Stroj when his A 8 held up against Stroj’s K 8 . Bloch now has over 800,000 in chips.

Anthony Licastro: 211,000
Nikolai Evdakov: 206,200
Eliminations:
David Benyamine, Jennifer Harman, Al Adler, Grant Lang
Big Hands:
Jesus Heals Sprengers' Stack
Sprengers moved all-in and was called by Ferguson preflop. Ferguson showed A Q while Sprengers showed 6 6 . The board ran out 10 8 7 K J , and Ferguson made a broadway straight on the river only to lose to Sprenger's club flush. Sprengers doubled up to about 36,000.
David Benyamine's AK not the right color as he is eliminated
David Benyamine found himself on the wrong side of "big slick" as he went all in holding AK. David Benefield called with the same hand. An ace on the flop with two diamonds seemed harmless enough, but running diamonds on the turn and river gave Benefield a diamond flush and Benyamine was sent to the rail.
Phil Laak Puts Ryan Young to the Test
Preflop, Young raised to 17,500. Laak jumped into the tank from the cutoff and then repopped to 49k total. Young then took his turn in the tank, asking Laak questions to try and acquire some information. Laak didn't give anything away, and Young threw his hand in the muck. Laak's stack stood at around 80,000 after the hand.
Ted Lawson Takes a Pot
Lawson raised preflop to 7,000 and was called by Tuan Le in the big blind. A flop of 2 A 8 followed and Lawson fired a shot of 12,000. Le folded and Lawson improved his stack to around 60,000. Le's stack was not severely affected and he maintains an above average chip stack.
Grant Lang Eliminated By A Set Of Cowboys
With a board showing A K 7 , Lang bet big trying to take the pot. John Kabbaj would have none of that, as he raised all in. Lang called and showed A 8 , trailing Kabbaj's K K . The 3 and 9 sealed Lang's fate and he was out of the tournament.
Table Talk:
Phil Laak and Kathy Liebert were overheard comparing the Unabomber's skills to the other notable Phils of poker. While it was agreed that Laak ranks lower than either Ivey or Hellmuth, they were unable to conclusively determine his position relative to Phil Gordon.

English and Irish Through the Wars
Apr 12, '08
Peter Roche from Dublin is no stranger to going deep in tournaments having made both a World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker final table as well as finishing 18th at the PokerStars.com EPT San Remo tournament recently.
Primarily a cash game player, Roche was moaning before the start of the tournament about the long days ahead. “I hate these things,” he said with a half smile. “You have to get massages,” he noted, referring to the obvious back pain he suffers during the long sessions.
At the second break he reported losing a large pot which would have left him with over 40,000 in chips. His opponent “player the hand really badly out of position” but managed to out-flush Roche on the river with A K to Roche’s made Queen-high flush.
The Irishman was philosophical though. “I got lucky earlier,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders. With 22,000 in chips he’s not doing to badly still.
Englishman John Kabbaj was rather nonplussed about his progress, or lack of it. While he was just below average with 16,000 in chips he confided he’d had a late night due to being unable to sleep after watching the golf on TV. He looked fresh enough though and having cashed three times previously in EPTs including a final table in Barcelona, he’s a good bet to last the distance today.
