Outcome

Preflop, with the blinds at 1,000 and 2,000 and a 300 ante, Vladimir Troyanovskiy raised to 5,500 from under the gun, Trickett called in the small blind, and Quoss called in the big blind. On the flop Trickett checked, Quoss checked and Troyanovskiy checked. On the turn Trickett bet 14,400, Quoss called and Troyanovskiy folded. On the river Trickett went all-in and Quoss called and was all-in.

Analysis

Trickett enjoyed a dominating hand preflop, but Quoss was able to come from behind to flop two-pair against Trickett’s bottom pair with the inside straight draw to Broadway. Although it was an action flop, the three high rollers checked it through until Trickett took a stab on fourth street. Quoss took a tricky line with his flat call here as his two pair and chip position were quite vulnerable. Trickett’s hand had some showdown value at the river, but he elected to turn his hand into a bluff and utilize tournament life pressure on his opponent. Against an aggressive and active opponent like Trickett, a passive line can be an effective strategy to induce bluffs. Trickett probably reasoned Quoss would have shown more strength at some point on such a coordinated board if he were capable of calling it off on the river. Most players in Quoss’ shoes would have previously sought to get value or protect their hand with a big raise as any Ace, Queen, Jack, or Nine would have been a very ugly card for such a two-pair holding. Trickett’s play was inspired by the board texture and his superior chip position against Quoss, but in the end they traded stacks as Quoss was ready to catch the bluff.
