Outcome

Preflop, with the blinds at 8,000 and 16,000 and a 2,000 ante, Gohr raised to 32,000 from the button, Schwartz reraised all-in from the big blind, and Gohr called.

Analysis

Schwartz knew his opponent could have open-raised with any number of hands from the button, but would only be able to call off his tournament life with a much more narrow range of holdings. With the rest of the table out of the hand and armed with a 1.8 : 1 chip advantage over Gohr, Scwhartz deployed the aggressive shove, playing upon the blinds vs. button dynamics. Schwartz was unable to get the fold with the leverage of his stack – his opponent found a great time to wake up with Aces on the button. Schwartz actually managed to make two-pair with the board, but Gohr’s flopped set gave him the winner and a welcome double-up. Schwartz lost 54% of his stack on the hand, and he subsequently finished in 52nd for $151,063. Gohr finished in 50th for the same payout.
