Poker sites have shown a willingness to give. Many poker sites made it quite clear in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti just how generous they and their players were. In the first two weeks after the 7.0 earthquake, the poker community donated more than $1.5 million to relief efforts.

But the charitable work doesn’t stop there.

UB, Absolute Poker, and Full Tilt have announced recent initiatives to raise more money for charity with special poker tournaments.

UB and Absolute Poker are hosting what they are calling their “Second Sundays” series on the Cereus Network, wherein the sites will host a $10 charity tournament every second Sunday through June.

Annie Duke is promoting charity poker tournaments on UBThis weekend, the network run a tournament for the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation. The $10 event starts at 10 a.m. PST on Sunday. Cash, UB and Absolute poker gear, and entries into the sites’ $200,000-guaranteed tournament are all up for grabs. The winner will also get a Rockwell Time limited-edition stainless steel “Pink” sports watch to commemorate and support cancer causes and research.

“We’re struggling with a difficult economy,” said Annie Duke, a UB pro. “Charitable organizations are experiencing a drastic decline in donations. Most people, though sympathetic to charitable causes, have simply cut back on personal expenditures. UB and Absolute are global communities. Its members have been very generous and supportive of charitable efforts in the past. This grassroots movement could mobilize more people to join our community in order to effectively make a difference.”

Duke stressed the importance of a larger number of people making an effort to give as opposed to just a few people opening up their wallets.

“This is not about individuals each making large donations. It’s about a large number of people collectively donating small amounts of money in order to make a difference,” said Duke.
