DOYLEISM OF THE DAY: “History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree on.”

Well, I did it. After reading some of the other poker player’s blogs, I noticed the ones that got the most response and comments were about politics. So I decided to give my opinion on a couple of controversial political topics and sure enough, there were tons of answers and criticism from the various places my blog appears. I noticed Lee Watkinson wrote about it and had 65 comments under his blog. I actually think readers don’t want to read about poker hands unless they are very unusual or happen in a big tournament at a crucial time. But if someone writes about getting two queens beat by A-K or someone making a flush to beat trips, does anyone really care?

For the record, I do have some concerns about today’s government. Do Americans really understand the healthcare bill? It’s downright scary. I’m really worried about the mounting debt we have, the unemployment, the illegal immigrants, the oil spills, terrorists, N. Korea, Iran and on and on. What the heck do people think is going to happen if Iran gets nuclear weapons and starts thinking about Israel? Talk about World War III. Israel will never wait to be attacked, they will strike first. I know if we can’t produce products in America that compete pricewise with imports, we are in for a long recession. If we don’t get to the polls and vote, we have nobody to blame but ourselves.

I got back from Costa Rica just in time to play in Star’s Big Game, a cash poker game to be aired on Fox sometime in June. I can’t give away any results before it airs, but I believe it will be a very good show, rivaling High Stakes as the most popular poker show. The set was spectacular and is the best I’ve seen.

Speaking of Costa Rica, that 3rd world country is really shaping up. I’ve been going there a couple of times a year to visit Doylesroom’s home office. It has changed immensely in that time with new modern buildings being built everywhere. The streets are cleaner and wider than they were and China is building a huge 130 million dollar sports stadium for Costa Rica. Something to do with a political favor. With the addition of DirecTV on Continental Airlines, the flight is much more enjoyable.

On my flight, when we stopped in Houston, the lady sitting next to me started asking me questions about Texas and Texans. She was a schoolteacher from Ohio and when she found out Texas was my home state she wanted to know why Texans loved their state so much. I gave her a brief summary of Texas History, complete with the story of the Alamo and our fight with Mexico that we won to become a Republic. We do have certain bragging rights because when we joined the U.S. as the 29th state, we were given the honor of being able to fly our flag at the same height as Old Glory. We can’t help it if we talk about our heritage as Texans.

I don’t like the response poker is getting about wearing sunshades at the poker table. I’ve been campaigning against allowing them for 20 years. I didn’t know it for years but is a fact that any marks on cards can be seen better with dark glasses. I agree that 99% of the time the person wearing them is innocent of any wrongdoing, but the tournament directors should take control of the danger. Even though lots of the players don’t like it, the human element of seeing your opponent should be a part of poker.

If you remember my referring to my neighborhood as Kittyville, a terrible thing has happened. Despite our calls to Animal Control, they wouldn’t come get the 3 dozen feral cats running loose around here. I noticed there were fewer and fewer animals so I asked one of our security guards if he knew what had happened to them. He reported seeing a Kit Fox (whatever that is) coming across Spanish Hills with a cat in its mouth. Also, there are coyotes roaming around looking for cats and small dogs. My dogs don’t get outside unless someone is with them.

I really felt old this week at the poker table when I said my hometown of Sweetwater, Texas has an unusual record. In the 1st draft into the NFL Hall of Fame, Sweetwater, a town of 10,000 people, had two inductees. They were Sammy Baugh and Bulldog Turner and no one at the table had ever heard of them. It reminded me of a poker interview when the reporter asked me who was the greatest poker player I had played with. I told him, “Chip Reese” and he didn’t know who he was. I guess this quote I have on a plaque in my office is true. “No one remembers the headliners of yesterday. Awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten and accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.”

Perhaps that is as it should be.

Hi Doyle, Just a couple of comments, and one question:

Agreed about contents of the blogs. I'd rather hear about your thoughts on politics or even about what is going on in the neighborhood than some boring hand dissection every single time.

Re: voting- I'm not sure even if we had 100% turnout that a huge difference would be made. The corruption of the political system by big corporations is so entrenched now that party lines don't even really seem to matter. The interests of the people of the United States has been replaced by the interest of the Corporate State. I'm all for patriotism but at this point I cannot associate patriotism in any way with government or the leadership in this nation on any level really. Thats my opinion and I'm sure I'll get nailed for it by someone.

Re: Iran- They will never make it that far. Iran is full of people who are disgusted by their government and really want things to change [for the better] in their country. Sound familiar? I think most of the populace is a lot more receptive to western culture than is being reported by our media. In any case they all know it would be suicide if they were to even get close to having the bomb.

Question: I know you commented before about T. Boone Pickens- what do you think is the biggest problem holding up wind energy development in the US?

Thanks for the blog!!

Funny, what exactly is the bad behavior of Iran albeit looking out for the interests of their people via setting up nuclear power plants? The US is the worst terrorist state in the world, committing hundreds of thousands of terrorist crimes per year. Last time I checked Iran hasn't invaded or waged war on another country in hundreds of years since the fall of the Persian empire. The US on the other hands has waged dozens of illegal, and criminal wars on innocent countries and have killed countless millions of people! Ur clearly an incompetent moron.

Doyle,
why is it worrying if Iran gets its hand on some nukes? Isn't it being threatened with attack by the US and Israel constantly, thus for security purposes would do well to have some nukes to use as a deterrent? They have just as much right to nukes as any other country. Is it not worrying that the US has thousands of nukes and HAS USED THEM in the past on Japan killing 300,000 people? What about Israel, they have hundreds of nukes and is a warmongering rogue terrorist state. That country has no right to even exist, they stole the land in 46' and have been slaughtering the Palestinians ever since. They have illegally invaded neighboring countries like Lebanon and killed thousands of their civilians in terrorist acts from land and sky. I guess I can't be surprised at ur idiotic views seeing as you were educated by the perpetrator. I think that Zionist commando Eli Elezra has rubbed off on u a little too much. Get help, ur intellect is dropping dramatically.

Doyle, I wish I could sit down with you for a cup of coffee (my treat!) when I'm in Vegas. All the qualities you admire in Chip Reese are possessed by you as well. It doesn't hurt that I agree with your politics 100%! Of all the poker players portrayed on TV and in print, you are absolutely the one I respect the most, and I love the way you conduct yourself, really in all aspects of your life. I'm just a 43 year old LA lawyer with a wife and 2 kids (and a recreational poker player). Since you mentioned reading the comments to Lee W's blog, I thought I'd post a comment for the first time in my life just to make sure you knew you had a lot of fans out there.

doyle, do you HONESTLY think that things would have been a lot better had mccain won? all those problems that you mentioned are of course of great concern. but even with a republican administration we probably would still be talking about unemployment, immigration, terrorists and north korea. the only difference would be, the democrats will the ones bringing them up and doing the complaining. as for the healthcare, before the elections obama promised a healthcare reform and he delivered on that promise. as they say, elections have consequences.

btw, i'm a great fan of yours.

Doyle, I have been a fan since SuperSystem I and am a few years older than you. Your comments about where we are in America today, the general ignorance of American history and the transience of fame are quite appropriate. The loss of manufacturing capacity and jobs and the lack of control of our borders and visa issuance have continued unabated under Republican and Democratic administrations. Arizona having to protect itself enforcing federal law while Washington fiddles would be unbelievable to someone like Teddy Roosevelt.

Doyle, you are right, the health care bill was nothing but politics of socialism and the hatred of the left on a capitalistic system. It will eventually make the US like Costa Rica, a third world country and that is just what obama and his commie friends want. To destroy our economy, our military and way of life is all the libs want, watch Glenn Beck for the truth, he has them all on tape, their own words wanting to destroy us, all obama criminal cronies...can't make that up.

It would be an honor to sit down and just listen to your stories and views...GO DOYLE!

LOL Glenn Beck the Jay Leno wannbe on FOX right wing propaganda network. But instead of selling jokes and entertainment he spews hatred if you have different ideas then he does. You are talking about the Glenn Beck on fair and balanced reporting Fox propaganda network that got caught with there draws down for showing rallies perported to be Tea Party rallies with huge turn outs that were not. If that is the Glenn Beck you are talking about he is lucky he is not pinocchio his nose would be some around Mars about now.

The health care system has shattered the "American Dream"? Iran is not interested in using nuclear weapons? Just how far up your butt is your head?
I recently had an MRI the cost was $1800 when my children are ill I go see our doctor at his office. The wait at emergency facilties is because people abuse them. Try seeing your doctor for headaches and sore throats instead of going to emergency room for every little thing.
We have the right to spend the money we earn any way we want. Oh no we don't we must purchase health insurance now or be fined or possibly jailed. That is in the new health bill you should read it before you embrace it.
Many people do not have health insurance because they choose not to . People in their 20's see little need for it they never get sick. People choose to spend their money on big screen TV's,new cars a bigger house etc... That is their chose and the rest of us must pay for their insurance because THEY DON"T WANT TO.
Government intervention in the private sector has never been successful. Our current housing problem Fannie and Freddie lowering the qualifications and raising the limits on the amount of money a person can borrow. Government tried to run the Mustang Ranch couldn't even make money selling sex and alcohol.
The current administration and congress seems to be bent on controlling all aspects of our lives. We will be losing many freedoms we have taken for granted. Limiting the amount of money you can earn is in the crosshairs with more infringements to follow.

I would agree with your position on health care emetjr if the people who forego health care premiums so they can buy a big screen tv or spend their money on anything they want to are willing to except the consequences of their decisions. Even young people get sick or have accidents. If you opt to not pay for health care and you get sick or are injured in some way and cannot pay for medical treatment out of pocket then since you decided to buy a big screen tv instead of health care ins. you have to heal yourself. I have had a sick child at 1 am good luck trying to get your family doctor. I abused the emergency room sorry.

You guys are funny about Glenn Beck, he shows these commies in their own words, on tape, not like the obama lies and Chicago mob politics. Talk about getting real, listen to him and not your lying cnn/msnbc, at least you get the truth at FOX. Proof is watching the video tapes of the people attacking this country say what they really want live and in person, that is what you are afraid of...The Truth...still funny that you refuse to believe them at their own commie/socialist/mao words.

Urban legend
It is a common urban legend that the Texas flag is the only state flag that is allowed to fly at the same height as the U.S. flag. Allegedly, Texas has this right inherently (as a former independent nation) or because it negotiated special provisions when it joined the Union (this version has been stated as fact on a PBS website). However, the legend is false. Neither the Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States nor the Ordinance of Annexation contain any provisions regarding flags. According to the United States Flag Code, any state flag can be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag; the U.S. flag should be on its right (the viewer’s left), however. Consistent with the U.S. Flag Code, the Texas Flag Code specifies that the state flag should either be flown below the U.S. flag if on the same pole or at the same height as the U.S. flag if on separate poles.

emetjr....You can call it a "Choice" of you want but if you options are "Have health ins" or "Eat", there is no choice my friend. Instead of bringing up false facts, be realistic. It is not a choice to not be able to get affordable health care. These folks would love Health insurance and the health care that comes with it, however, they can not afford it. The new laws gives them some help with subsidies so that they can afford and still "Eat". Because you can choose to or not, don't put yourself in the shoes of someone less fortunate. If you want to know what's wrong with the USA, everybody is looking out for #1. No one cares about their neighbor or fellow man anymore. Only for "Theirs". Im get mine and F**k everyone else.
Conservatives only plan is Tort reform. That will not control the rising cost of Health Care. It will not make Health Insurance more affordable or advance it to the millions or cannot afford it. Doing nothing was not fixing the problem.
If you subscribe to the theory that Glenn Beck is right or is some sort of expert in anything other than ratings...You sir are one of the Sheep. Not follow Shepherd Beck right off the cliff.

BigSlick I am bring up facts not fiction my daughter is am employee of DOD her position is in employee benefits. A little over 30% of these employees DO NOT PURCHASE HEALTH INSURANCE. It is a mixture of some recent college graduates and others earning well above the national average.
I am 58 have idividual health insurance and pay $500 a month but I do not have a $2000 a month mortgage or $500 car payment so I can afford it. My health insurance policy is with Blue Cross not the bottom of their policy choices in fact it is @nd lowest deductible. major medical plans can be purchased starting as low as $40 a month.
The people who truely can not afford to buy food are already covered through other government programs. Many hospitals will give treatment without patients having insurance.
I do agree our health insurance industry was a problem and needed to be addressed. The reasons, provisions in bill and the way it was passed was wrong. As is this bill will not fix the wrongs nor will it be equally applied to everyone(to many special deals to buy votes). It puts an extra burden on most States whose budgets are already in the red.
You accuse others of not knowing the facts when it is you who speak from emotion and not facts. I fyou listen to our politians we are a country about to collapse with sweeping change. Many of them have been in Congress for quite awhile maybe we should hold them accountable if they are correct.
We were in need of health reform but we didn't get that. All we got was more Federal Government intervention in our lives. I read the bill(very tedious) you should also) not just rely on bullit points of the backers.
