End Of Day 2B
PearlJammed By Colson

With a board of 8 6 4 7 Carl Olson bet $40,000 and Jon Turner called.  The 8 fell on the river and Olson bet $50,000.  After a few minutes of consideration Turner called.  Olson quickly revealed 6 5 for a straight.  Turner flipped up his 9 8 before sliding them into the muck while Olson raked the monster pot.  Turner's stack was crippled, and he was forced to move all-in later in the hour. Both Thor Hansen and Carl Olson called, and after a board of 9 9 8 9 K Hansen bet out and Olson folded.  Hansen took his bet back and before he revealed his hand Turner flipped up 10 9 for quads.  He was still dangerously short despite winning that pot, however, and was eliminated only minutes later.

Hansen Glad Of Table Break

On a board of 10 9 3 K seat two bet $44,500 and Hansen came back over the top, announcing that he was all-in.  His opponent folded and Hansen picked up the pot. Hansen was later overheard saying how tough his table was to Greg Mueller.  "I mean, [at that table] I don't want to play a big pot. I don't want aces and all of a sudden to have someone check raise me on a 10-9-6 board."   Hansen's table broke midway through the level, sending his tough and deep stacked opponents Hevad Kahn and Sorel Mizzi to other tables and easing Hansen's mind.

Negreanu Busts

Team PokerStars member Daniel negreanu has been eliminated from the $10,000 championship event. His elimination was announced by Nollan Dolla, and many in the field applauded.  Some were probably just happy to have one less tough  veteran in the field.

Can't See The Forrest For His Big Slick

After only a few players limped into the pot Ted Forrest raised to $20,000 from  the small blind.  A late position limper quickly moved all-in for roughly $10,000 more.  Forrest thought for just a few seconds before calling with A K.  His opponent flipped up the K 9 and Forrest looked as if he was going to pad his stack.  The cards had other plans, however, and the board came down K 9 2 4 10.  Forrest opponent seemed slightly abashed as he raked the pot.   Against the same player Forrest called a $51,000 bet on a board of J 9 6 A 6 with J Q.  His opponent revealed the J 7, and they split the pot.   After scrapping at his table for most of the night, Forrest ended with around $255,000.

The night came to an end shortly after midnight, with play lasting exactly as long as it did yesterday. Approximately 459 players remained at the end of today, which means just over 800 players will start day three tomorrow.  With payouts starting at 621st place, the money bubble should burst within a few levels.  Make sure to check back tomorrow for all the day three action here at Cardplayer.com.

Night Train
Quit Your Day Job?

Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy has been on the tournament floor for part of the evening.  This is normal...when he is playing.  He has somehow obtained a media pass, and is sweating some players.  He has gone all the way, and even is carrying a notepad.  Whether or not he has written anything, were not sure.   If he wants to help out Cardplayer.com and write some updates for us, we would be more then happy to accommodate.

Keep Him Guessing

On a board of 942J a player in seat two leads into Gus Hanson for $11,600.  Hanson takes his time, contemplating in in front of numerous media.  He finally makes the call and river brings the 10.  Again seat two bets, this time $17,700.  Again Hanson goes into thought.  After several minutes he decides to make the call.  His opponent rolls over J10 for runner runner two pair.  Hanson says,"I can't beat that.", then tosses his hand into the muck.

Beating Jesus

On a board of AK210, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson checks and his opponent bet $12,000.  Ferguson makes the the call, and the A falls on the river.  Ferguson checks, and remains statuesque as his opponent studies him.  The opponent decides on a bet to $25,000.  Ferguson mucks, and his opponent drags a healthy pot.

When It Rains...

PokerStars Supernova Hevad "RaiNKhaN" Khan called an all-in preflop with J J and found himself in a race situation against his opponents A Q.   The flop came down 10 7 6 and Khan began chanting the turn and river cards that he wished to see.  After the 4 fell on the turn he began to chant even louder and faster, "Four-two-six, four-two-six, four-two-six!" After the 8 fell on the turn he politely shook the hand of his busted opponent and began stacking his new chips. Kahn is at the same table as Gus Hansen and Sorel Mizzi, and all three have huge stacks.   Another player at the table joked about his misfortune, pointing to the newly empty seat and dryly saying, "Bring on the chip leader."  Kahn, an accomplished online player who was surely negatively affected by the UIGEA had a better idea.  "Bring on Bill Frist."

Battle of the Big Stack Aggressors

Gus Hansen and Sorel Mizzi are both known for their aggressive play.  When the two butt heads one gets the feeling that they are playing a game of chicken. Just such a encounter happened this past hour.  With a flop of K 7 4 Hansen bet $7,600 and Mizzi raised to $17,600.  After a few minutes thought Hansen called the $10,000 and the turn brought the 4.  Hansen checked and Mizzi bet $27,200.  Hansen went into the tank for a while, seemingly in deep concentration.   He eventually called and the 2 fell on the river.  Hansen checked and Mizzi checked behind.  Hansen flipped up his K J and Mizzi mucked his hand.

Forrest's Opponent Lays Down On The Job

With a board of A 5 3 J a player in early position checked and Ted Forrest bet $11,000.  The early position player raised to $31,500.  Forrest thought for a minute before calling.  The 2 fell on the river and the early position player quickly went all-in with a stack of comparable size to Forrest's.   Only seconds after moving in his chips the player walked a few steps away from the table, turned around and lowered himself to the floor.  Forrest stood up to try to get a look at his opponent, but barely could as he was laying with his head on the legs of his chair.  After a couple of minutes of intense consideration, Forrest decided to fold.

Players are on a 15 minute break between levels. When they return it will be to increased blinds of $1,200-$2,400 with a $300 ante for level 11.

Level 9B Recap Part 1
639 players returned from the dinner break on 71 tables, and after it was announced that they would play only this level and an hour and twenty minutes into the next before play was stopped for the day, many of those players must have taken this to mean turn on the gas.

No Agony Just Yet

Michael McClain 2004 Main Event 9th place finisher is more widely known for being the player immortalized as the "Agony of Defeat" as his infamous pout was replayed on all telecasts of the 2003 World Series Poker on ESPN.  McClain is currently a short stack, and got a reprieve when he was able to sniff out a river bluff by his opponent and double up.  With the board reading J 6 2 9 2, McClain's opponent bet $30,000 which more than covered his remaining chips.  McClain announced, "I think your weak here," and made the call.  His opponent showed K Q, and McClain showed 9 8 for the win.  We won't be seeing McClain's agony face just yet.

I'll See Your 56 And Raise You 25

Table 56 was already impressive, but with the addition of one more notable player, it truly becomes worth mentioning.  Two poker's old guard are seated alongside, two of the up-and-coming young internet players.  In seat 1 Hans "Tuna" Lund sets up shop, while seated across in seats 4-6 are Thor Hansen, Carl "colson" Olson, and Jon "PearlJammer" Turner.  So far no large confrontations have occured, but there's plenty of play left tonight.

This table is nothing compared to Table 25 which features 3 of the players in the top 5 in chips in tournament.  The most recent addition to the table is Sorel "ImperIum" Mizzi, who was recently seen struggling to carry 6 full racks over to the stacked table (albeit 3 of these racks are black chips).  He greats the Great Dane Gus Hansen in seat 7, and PokerStars Supernova Hevad "RaiNKhaN" Khan, both who are nursing huge chip stacks.  Currently two ESPN cameras, about 5 media reporters, and the kitchen sink are camped out around the table waiting for some fireworks.

John Murphy Loses Freeroll

Action is folded around to John Murphy who raises from late position to $6,000.  Seat 7 reraises all in for $30,000 from the cutoff.  Seat 1 raises to $60,000 from the big blind to isolate, but Murphy then moves all in over the top for about $180,000.  Seat 1 folds Q Q face up, and Chip Jett commends him for a good fold, but then Murphy flips up A K, while Seat 7 holds 5 5.  The board runs out 8 6 5 6 3, and Seat 7 manages to double up, while Murphy ends up almost where he started the hand.

Dario Wins Big

PokerStars wunderkind Dario Minieri collected a huge pot after his pocket Kings were outflopped.  Mineri pushed all in over the top of Seat 2's raise on the flop of Q 10 9 with K K, and was called fairly quickly, elicting a frustrated response from Mineri, as he was behind Seat 2's Q 9.  The turn caught Mineri up quick as the J peeled off giving him the straight.  The J on the river was not enough to save Seat 2 and he was eliminated sending well over $100,000 to Mineri.

Players on Dinner Break

The remaining 666 players are going on dinner break; they will return at 8:30.

Yeah I Won This Tournament Once

Often lost in the shuffle of larger-than-life personalities is the quiet, unassuming Robert Varkonyi.  Many may attack his skills on the felt, but it should not be forgotten that this man caused Phil Hellmuth to have to shave his head.

One player at his table certainly underestimated him.  On a board of Q 9 8 5 Varkoni bet $10,000 into a sizable pot, leaving himself only $34,900 behind, The player in seat 7 then moved all in for about $40,000.  Varkonyi then went into the tank, and the ESPN cameras moved in for the kill.  Varkonyi asked his opponent, “What do you want me to do?” and was met with stone-cold silence.  After several minutes, Varkonyi made the call, Seat 7 slowly turned over A J, and Varkonyi showed his Q10 (virtually identical to the hole cards with which he won the Main Event in 2002, save for the suits being reversed).  The river was the 5, and Varkonyi more than doubled up.

Big Pot For Amsterdam

Rolf Slotboom got a whole lot healthier chipwise in the last level, when he found himself on the nicer side of a cooler.  Slotboom made a reraise to the action from the player in Seat 1 at his table, and was then tapped by Seat 1 in response.  Slotboom made the call for his last $54,300, and went through the roof when Seat 1 flipped J J to his Q Q.  The board ran out 7 5 4 5 10, and Slotboom raked in the huge pot while fellow Hollander, Team Pokerstars member Noah Boeken looked on (somehow he’s found himself a media pass).  Slotboom now has plenty of building blocks for his creative chip-stacking tendencies.

Keep It In The Family For Now

Todd Brunson is still surviving today, but one of his clan that seems to be receiving very little fanfare is his sister Pamela Brunson.  Pamela is currently sitting at about $103,000 in chips.  Some of her good fortune could be contributed to one of her card protectors., her father’s Zippo, with a Ghostbuster’s Logo, Casper.  In the World Series coverage in the past, much has been made about this protector, as Howard Lederer has famously paid a large sum of money, to be guaranteed to receive this good luck charm at the time of Doyle’s passing.  However Doyle shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and today his daughter Pam gets the satisfaction of using Casper.

They Never Believe Me

In the last hand before the break, the player in seat 3 at Bill Edler’s table announced before the deal that this was the hand to steal, as he was in the big blind, and had barely more than $20,000 in chips.  The table folded around to Edler on the button, who raised to $6,000, Seat 3 then moved all in, and Edler called.  Seat 3 showed K Q, but Edler had him in bad shape with A Q.  The flop all but sealed it, coming A 6 5, and the 2 and 6 on the river couldn’t save Seat 3.  Gavin Smith, seated just one table over, peered over as his table left, and commented, “Geez, Bill, do you always bust somebody before the dinner break?”  And Edler simply replied, “They never believe that I have it.”  Smith then implored Edler to stack his winnings quickly so they could get to dinner.

Day 2B Level 3 Hour 1

So Its Not Just A Clever Name

Todd Brunson has been nursing a short stack most of the day, and he finally made a stand after his opponent re raised his preflop bet, Brunson asked, “I guess you have Aces don’t you?”  As his opponent hesitated, Brunson was convinced he couldn’t, but for extra effect he pushed in his energy drink can, the name of which appropriately matched the state of his chips at the moment.  Brunson showed K K and his opponent held 10 10.  The board came A 93 Q 3, and Brunson doubled to just over $50,000.

Strange Raise Benefits Matador

Carlos Mortensen limped under the gun, Seat 9 limped from the cutoff, the button limped, the small blind limped, and interestingly the big blind raised only $3,000 more.  None of the limper could be chased out for such a small bet, so they all called.  The flop was A 8 Q.  Seat 2 led out for $6,000 from the small blind.  The big blind folded, Mortensen raised to $15,000, chasing all the other players out of the pot except Seat 2 who called.  The turn was the 2, Seat 2 checked, Mortesen bet $15,000, and Seat 2 called.  The river was the 6, Seat 2 checked, and Mortensen thought about betting, but merely tapped the table.  Seat two showed A J, but Mortensen had outflopped him, showing Q 8.

Commanding Respect

John Murphy and Lee Watkinson apparently have players who respect their raises, or they simply like to bluff.  Murphy raised to $6,500 from the big blind after three players limped, and all but the small blind called.  The flop came A 6 4, and all players checked.  Murphy and the player in Seat 8 checked the K on the turn, the player in Seat 3 bet $15,000, and Murphy beat him into the pot with a raise to $45,000.  After some consideration Seat 3 conceded the pot to Murphy.

At another table, Lee Watkinson raised preflop from early position, Fabrice Souiler called from the cutoff, the button reraised to $20,000, Watkinson eventually made the call, and Souiler quickly folded.  The flop came A 9 3, and both players checked.  The turn was the A, Watkinson checked, the button bet $22,500, and Watkinson raised to $50,000.  The button asked for a confirmation of the size of the raise and subsequently folded.

There are currently 81 tables in play, with approximately 725 players still in the field.

Gus Hansen and Bill Edler are the two most recognizable among the chip leaders both have an excess of $300,000.

Still alive for Team PokerStars in the field are Humberto Brenes, Chris Moneymaker, and of course featured table favorite Daniel Negreanu

Day 2B - Level Two - Hour Two

No Hustle Gussle up to $280,000

Seat four moved all in and Gus Hansen made the call with a huge sprawling stack in front of him. He flipped over A 8 and his opponent showed down 5 3. The board rolled out 8 6 2 5 2. Hansen grew his stack to $280,000 after the hand.

The $400,000 Benchmark

Jeff “J.P.” Parker now holds $430,000. He is seated at a table with Amnon Filippi and two other stacks that hold over $200,000. Bill Edler had also built a large stack at a table within the vicinity.

Gigabet Busted Opponent

Darrell “Gigabet” Dicken raised and his opponent moved all in on a flop of Q 6 10 K. Dicken made the call and flipped over A J. His opponent showed K Q and river rolled out the 2. Dicken took down the pot with Broadway and his opponent was sent to the rail.

Thor Takes a Hit

Seat five moved all in for $23,600 and Thor Hansen made the call. Hansen turned over A K and seat five showed pocket threes. The board was rolled out 10 3 2 J 2 and seat five doubled up.

Irish Troubles

Padraig Parkinson has been eliminated - his full house, kings over sevens, deemed not good enough. Scott Gray took a $100,000 hit when 'some rockstar' hit running cards on the turn and river to fill a straight and trump Scott;s flopped trip Jacks. Mick McCloskey is gone and Ken 'KPNuts' Powell hit running threes to keep his dream alive for a while at least - he has $17,200 in chips.

900 Players Remain
There are approximately 900 players remaining in today's day two field, meaning we have lost over four hundred players in just three short hours. The tournament area is condensing and level eight is halfway completed. The introduction of cash games and spectators has increased the energy in the room and the players are starting to loosen up as a result.

O Brother Where Art Thou?
We've mentioned the Binger brothers earlier and how this year's Main Event has seen plenty of family members and husband and wife duos but we have left out a special pair of brothers. Amnon Filippi is a household name in the poker world, but little is often said about his brother, David Filippi. Both are in the field today and are actually sitting at tables right next to each other.

Shake, Shake, Shake That MoneyMaker!
Chris Moneymaker, Main Event champion in 2003 and member of Team PokerStars , has been haunted throughout his career by the title of "one hit wonder." Moneymaker is making a strong push to vindicate himself in this year's Main event and after a few large ups and downs has over $105,000 in chips. Moneymaker has found an arch nemesis at his table in the eighth level and his name is Brad Babiuk. Moneymaker made a large preflop raise and was called by only Babiuk, who was in the big blind. The flop came 8 8 7 and Babiuk bet out. Moneymaker came back over the top all in for around $100,000 and Babiuk instantly called. "You got an eight?" asked Moneymaker. Babiuk showed 8 7 for the flopped full house and Moneymaker couldn't believe it. Everyone at the table looked to see what Moneymaker was holding and in front if his chips lay A A. "Come on ace!" yelled Moneymaker. The turn brought the 6 and the river was the 4. Moneymaker doubled up Babiuk and lost around $50,000 on the hand. Moneymaker steamed for the next few hands and finally looked Babiuk straight in the eye and said, "I want my chips back." The very next hand Moneymaker got his chance. Babiuk and Moneymaker got tangled up again on a flop of K 7 3. Moneymaker bet out $2,500 and Babiuk instantly called. The turn was the K and this time Moneymaker led out with a bet of $11,000. Babiuk called and added $11,000 to the already large pot. The river was the 10 and Moneymaker fired again, this time for $12,700. "I call." said Babiuk calmly. Babiuk turned up K 9 for three of a kind. "Jack plays baby!" said Moneymaker as he turned over K J. Moneymaker was right, the jack did play and he scooped the large pot, rebuilding his stack to over $105,000. "You get them all back?" asked Babiuk. "Most of 'em" replied Moneymaker as he stacked his newly acquired chips.

Into the Break

The Grind Continues

A number of familiar faces were still in action as the afternoon ticked off the clock. Team PokerStars member Daniel Negreanu was seated at the featured table, while Darrell Dicken was seated at the on-deck circle. Also in the field were Humberto Brenes, J.C. Tran, Ciaran O’Leary, Eric Hershler, Chad Brown, Bill Gazes, Amnon Filippi, Chuck Kelley, Bill Edler, Isaac Haxton, Gavin Smith, Prahlad Friedman, Ralph Perry, Ted Forrest, Gus Hansen, Mimi Tran, Leif Force, and Peter Jetten. Lost over the past hour were Theo Tran and Allen Cunningham. A few of the professionals have been seated together at the tougher tables. Rene Angelil and Lee Watkinson were seated together, as were Todd Brunson and Padraig Parkinson.

Former World Champions

Chris Ferguson, Robert Varkonyi, Carlos Mortensen, and Chris Moneymaker were all still in the hunt for their second world champion bracelets.

Band of Brothers

Michael Binger and his brother Nicholas are both in the tournament field today. Michael is seated with Mortensen. While Nicholas is seated with Chris Grigorian, Nicholas just took a large pot off the “Armenian Express” when he induced him to fold with a substantial raise on a flop of K Q Q.

Charisma

Daniel Negreanu is the featured player at the featured table and both the bleachers surrounding the stage and the ‘No Limit Lounge’ are full as a result. The charisma that Kid Poker brings to the felt is contagious among the crowd and they cheer each and every pot that he takes down. That applause can be heard from any point in the Amazon room, at some times turning heads of the other players in response to an especially loud outburst. That is until Negreanu losses a pot; when that happens the crowd goes dead silent, and if there were crickets present in the room you could have heard them.

Professional Pots

Chad Brown took down a $90,000 pot when he flopped the nut straight on flop of K-J-9 with Q-10 in the hole. The turn and river cards bricked, but there was now three hearts on the board. On the river his opponent raised $30,000 and Brown went into the tank. The actor, with a flair for the dramatic said, “The only thing I can beat is aces,” due to the flush possibilities on board. He eventually called and his opponent flipped over pocket aces. Brown took down the pot and now had a healthy amount of chips.

Costanza

On a of 9 6 5 6 seat two moved all in and Jason Alexander went into the tank. He then turned to his opponent and said, “I have to ask you one serious question. What do you have?” This elicited an outpour of laughs from his table and he mucked his hand.

Hour One Recap
The cards hit the felt and almost immediately players starting pushing all in. The field started today 1,303 strong and already 100 of those have hit the rail. "All in and a call!" can be heard in almost every corner of the Amazon room as the short stacks look to get lucky or look to go home.

Gordon Makes an Early Exit
Phil Gordon was one of those short stacks and pushed all in early in the first hour and put his opponent in a difficult decision. The player in seat four, and english fellow, stewed over his decision while Gordon sat calm. Gordon's opponent finally called and reluctantly turned over K J, still not sure of his call. Gordon showed 6 5 and said, "put a small five out there dealer." The dealer wasn't listening and laid out K 7 7 on the flop. The player in seat four cried out in joy and then quickly apologized to Phil for his outburst. The turn was the 10 and Gordon knew his tournament was over. The J came on the river and Phil Gordon made an early day two exit.

Ladies Hold Up
Sparks were flying on table 22 and no they weren't between poker sweethearts Allen Cunningham and Melissa Hayden who are sharing the felt there. Will Turner, online qualifier on PokerStars , just doubled up to $70,000. The player in seat one pushed all in and the action folded to Turner in the nine seat. Turner didn't hesitate to call and showed Q Q. The player in seat one flipped up pocket tens and knew he was in trouble. The board came 9 7 6 9 A and Turner's queens held up. A player at the table commented that Turner was lucky that an eight didn't hit on the river. Hayden, who hand't been paying attention to the hand, commented that it was unlikely because she had folded pocket eights.

So Close, Yet So Far
It's always nice to have someone bet into you when you're holding a monster, just ask Mimi Tran. Tran bet out before the flop and the player two seats to her left reraised all in for $30,000. The action folded back to Tran who called and showed A A. Her opponent in the six seat turned over A J and looked utterly disapponted. The dealer put out K Q 8 on the flop and the player in seat six perked up with a sense of new life. "Come on" he muttered under his breath. The turn was the 7. "I heard you get a free massage for a royal," commented a player at the table. The river was the 5 and Tran's opponent was sent to the rail without his free rub down. Tran doubled up to a little over $60,000 after the hand.

Gus Misses the Re-Steal
Everyone knows that when you sit at a table with Gus Hansen, you're sitting with one of the most aggressive players in the game. Hansen bet out $2,800 before the flop and got two callers, the four seat and the player in the big blind. The flop came K 4 2 and the player in the big blind checked. Hansen fired out $6,100 and the player in seat four couldn't get out of the way fast enough. The player in the big blind calmly counted out the appropriate amount of chips and called. The turn was the 5 and both players checked. The Q hit on the river and the player in the big blind checked to Hansen. Hansen looked at his chips and then back at his opponent. This happened two or three more times before Hansen eventually checked himself. The player in the big blind turned over K 3 for top pair and Hansen nodded and mucked his hand.

PearlJammer Doesn't Back Down
Jon Turner, no relation to Will Turner mentioned above, is known by many as a great online player. Bringing his aggressive online style to live play has worked well for turner and his chip stack usually reflects that. With the board showing Q 9 7, Turner led out with a $4,100 bet. His opponent in the hand immediately popped him to $10,500. Turner stared down his opponent and must have sensed weakness. Turner brought in his original bet with his right hand and replaced it with a bet of $30,500 with his left. Turner's opponent angrily folded his hand and Turner scooped up his newly aqcuired chips.
