Analysis

Chen attempted to use his chip lead to hammer Kitai into submission in this spectacular hand. Something about Chen’s bet sizing or demeanor might have led Kitai to suspect his opponent was bluffing but unfortunately for Kitai, Chen was bluffing with the best hand – until the river. We don’t know if Kitai would have been prepared to make the call without the paired Five on the river, but he apparently suspected his King high could have been leading on the turn. Kitai deliberated for some time on the river, and between putting Chen on the rack and investigating the polarizing character of the shove Kitai suddenly emerged with the amazing call. Kitai took the chip lead on the hand, and subsequently won the tournament when his K-7 bested Chen’s A-Q. Chen played incredibly well and earned €613,000 for his runner up finish in accordance with a deal he struck with Kitai. Kitai earned €712,000 and became the first Belgain to win an EPT major. He also won a WSOP bracelet in 2008, and a WPT Celebrity Invitational event. With the EPT, WSOP, and WPT titles under his belt, he joins Gavin Griffin, Roland de Wolfe, Jake Cody and Elky as the fifth player to with poker’s “Triple Crown.”
