Outcome

Final table, heads up, with the blinds at 600,000-1,200,000 with a 200,000 ante, Cada raised to 3,000,000 from the button, Moon reraised to 8,000,000 from the big blind, Cada reraised all in, Moon called.

Analysis

After 79 hands of heads up play, Moon had captured an impressive 2.6-1 chip lead over Cada, an online heads-up grinder. Since Cada had started the heads-up match with a 2.3-1 chip lead over Moon, Moon exceeded many people’s expectations with this turnaround against a heads-up specialist after some extended play. However, just eight hands later, Cada enjoyed the 1.7-1 lead that he held at the start of this final hand. Moon had 60 big blinds, far too deep a stack to call off with queen high once Cada moved in. If Moon had a stack of 10 times the blinds or lower, the call could be good against an aggressive opponent, but with so much at stake and plenty of play left in his stack, he should have made the laydown and pressed on. It turned out to be a coinflip, which may have been a good result for Moon given this was his opponent’s area of expertise. Moon impressed everyone with some solid play and humility throughout the tournament, and his runner-up finish earned him $5,182,601. Moon has threatened to quit poker after this tournament, and refused lucrative sponsorship deals before the final table. We can only hope the gentlemen logger will return to the felt. Cada ran hot, to say the least, and with some luck captured every last chip in play, earning $8,546,435 in the Big One. In addition, Cada broke Peter Eastgate’s recent record as the youngest ever main-event champion. Congratulations to both.
