Outcome

Final table, three-handed, with the blinds at 500,000-1,000,000 with a 150,000 ante, Cada raised to 2,550,000 from the small blind, Saout reraised to 7,300,000 from the big blind, Cada went all in, Saout called.

Analysis

While the value of pocket pairs goes up at a short-handed table, there is still a lot to be said for getting to the flop cheaply with baby pairs. Cada’s opening raise was inspired by the preference to end the hand preflop, as he might have to play his small pair out of position against a talented opponent on a board that promised overcards. Saout wanted to charge a potential overcard such as the ace or king an additional price to see the flop, so he promptly three-bet his queens back to the aggressive youngster. Cada elected to shove into his opponent’s representation of strength, but he was dominated and facing elimination once Saout snap-called. Had Cada played his hand more cautiously, the result would have probably been the same, given the flop, but as it happened Cada put a horrendous beat on the player who arguably played the best at this year’s final table. Instead of entering heads-up play with 120 million against Moon’s 75 million, Saout was forced to surrender half of his stack and slipped into third chip position.
