Pot-Limit Hold'em - Level 15
Jun 03, '08
Players returned after enjoying an extended 20-minute break as tournament officials used the chance to color up the chip stacks. There are 15 players remaining in the field.
Blinds: 3000/6000
Players left: 10
Eliminations: Eric Shanks, Scott Seiver, Philip Yeh, Douglas Carli, Brandon Schaefer.
Story Lines:
Work Before Play -- But Not Food
With a rash of player eliminations as the clock wound down in Level 15, players suddenly had a choice to make. They were down to 10-handed, with one more elimination needed before an official final table would be declared. The question was, do they continue playing, or break for dinner? The kitchen can take it as a vote of confidence that the players opted for the meal, which for one player can double as the Last Supper.
Big Hands:
The calm before the storm had players at ease, as for the first 40-45 minutes flops were harder to find than a quality sit-com. But that all changed with a series of all-ins and player eliminations in the waning minutes of Level 15.
Seiver Busts Out in a Flurry
Scott Seiver battled for the chip lead much of the event, and authored the first elimination of the level when his A K bested the A 9 of Eric Shanks. Seiver hit the K on the flop and never looked back, taking about 65,000 from Shanks who finished in 15th place.
Seiver had earlier been active stealing blinds, though twice folded to check -raises, but suffered his first blow when his raise to 16,000 from the button was met by a reraise from Joe Tehan in the big blind. Tehan went to 48,000, but this time Seiver resisted and fired back to the tune of 144,000. Tehan had 163,000 in chips remaining when the decision loomed, and elected to push all-in, drawing the call from Seiver. Seiver showed 6 6 while a relieved Tehan had Q Q . The flop came 9 3 8 , and the 10 on the turn gave Seiver additional outs, but the 10 on the river shipped the pot of over 400,000 to Tehan.
After busting Shanks, Seiver then dropped another pot of 155,000 when his 10 10 was up against the all-in A K of Jacobo Fernandez. In his last stand, Seiver then pushed his final 40,000 into the center with A 9 -- ironically the same hand that busted Shanks -- and Seiver fell to Russell Harriman who held A 10 . The flop of 10 8 6 gave Seiver gut-shot straight possibilities, but the 5 turnand 4 river ended his event in stunning fashion
Yeh Crowned by King
Philip Yeh, second in chips to begin the day, was eliminated in 13th place. The initial damage came in a match-up with Robert Lipkin. After a flop of J 8 6 , Lipkin bet 24,000 when the 5 came on the turn. Yeh made the call, and the 10 came as the river. Yeh checked, Lipkin bet 20,000 and Yeh debated what to do with his remaining 48,000. In the end he folded and Lipkin showed the A 5 for bottom pair.
Yeh was then eliminated when he pushed with 7 7 and ran into the A A of Zach King.
Two More Fall
Brandon Schaefer and Douglas Carli were the final two victims before 10-handed play was to begin. Carli persevered despite beginning the day with less than 10,000. Carli and Joe Tehan were two of the eight sub-10,000 shortstacks to begin the day, with Tehan now sitting comfortably among the final 10.

Hour One Recap
Jun 22, '07
Apparently $4,000 doesn’t provide enough play for J.C. Tran. Having been crippled in a previous hand, Tran finds himself all-in against another player’s Q 4 with a board of A Q J 3 9 . Unable to beat the Queens, Tran mucks and exits quickly today.
With only one quadrant of the Amazon Room filled today, it looks like this field will be very close to the 590 from last year. The number of familiar faces are greater per table than in yesterday’s $1,500 no limit field. At least two pros per table is standard. One table of note is Table 10 which houses Joe Hachem, Erica Schoenberg, Matt Hilger, and Gioi Luong. Schoenberg took a pot off of Hachem early on. The two of them saw a limped flop K Q 7 with one other player. The turn came 8 , Hachem bet $150, and both Schoenberg and the other player called. The river was the 10 , Hachem bet $425, and only Schoenberg called. Schoenberg showed 9 6 , and Hachem mucked. They’ve had a fun time at their table as well. When a new dealer sat down, he asked them, “We’re playing Omaha right?” as he dealt out each player four cards. They all politely corrected him and got back to business.
Apparently the dealers aren’t the only ones who aren’t paying attention. One player wanted to draw attention to the fact that the player in Seat 1 had won with a walk in the big blind. This is only interesting because Seat 1 had yet to arrive at his table. Somebody should nudge the Player in Seat 10 and wake him up.
Another stacked table of note includes Michael Mizrachi, Jon Friedberg, Ralph Perry, Jean Gaspard, and Eric “Rizen” Lynch. Lynch along with John Gale, and Doug Carli will be mapping their progress today in our Pro Blogs.

Steve Graboski Eliminated in 5th Place ($32,178)
Steve Graboski was the next player to meet elimination head on in fifth place. He took home $32,178 in prize money.
The Devastation of Greg Raymer
Greg Raymer was still the chip leader with $550,000. He was about to experience an unfortunate sequence of events. He started this journey by losing two pots to the tune of $100,000.
Next he lost the chip lead to Ryan Hughes. Raymer mucked on fifth street and Hughes now held $481,000 to Raymer’s $455,000. He then lost a pot to Min Lee. Lee turned up 8 3 (2 2 K 5) 2 and Raymer mucked. This was another large blow that knocked the Fossilman down to $280,000.
The most fatal blow to Raymer was delivered by his nemesis, Hughes. The two pumped the pot to epic proportions of chips and Raymer held only $8,000 when Hughes flipped up K 9 (10 K 6 8 ) 9 . Raymer mucked and he was now mortally wounded.
Raymer was now in all-in mode. “I figured the first time I got all in I was going to lose. So my plan was never to get all in,” said Raymer after he doubled up on the next hand. He won the next hand as well and said, “Sweet, I might not have to play this hand.”
While all this was going on Hughes had built his stack to $700,000. It was then Hughes who busted Raymer a few hands later. Raymer turned up 6 2 (A Q 8 J ) J and Hughes showed down K 3 (10 3 3 2 ) 8 . Raymer was eliminated in fourth place and he took home $61,880 in prize money. Hughes now had $820,000 to work with for ammo.
Douglas Carli Eliminated in 3rd Place ($61,880)
Douglas Carli was eliminated shortly after Raymer in third place and he took home $61,880 in cash.
Heads-Up!
The heads-up match was now set and the chip counts were as follows:
Ryan Hughes: $973,000
Min Lee: $388,000
