Before the Bubble Blow Outs
Oct 03, '08
Tony Cascarino went all-in with A-7 against pocket sixes and the board came down 10-9-8-8-K. And with that there is no longer any sports stars in this year's main event.
Kathy Liebert went up against Sorel Mizzi two before the bubble. Liebert was all-in with 22,400, Mizzi calls and reveals A Q and Liebert shows jacks. The board fell A 6 3 K Q and Liebert hit the rail. Mizzi chipped back up and seems in form this evening.
Hafiz Khan was very unlucky. First he was crippled holding fives by Joe Elpayaa with aces, and then he went out on the bubble holding jacks versus kings. Despite the fact the one spanish player left, Javier Dominguez in the tournament only had one big blind left.

Beware of the Smith and Wesson
Despite being seated at the same table with two world-class pros in Barry Greenstein and Stefan Mattsson, at the moment Jeremiah Smith seems to have complete control of his table.
Jeremiah Smith raised to 2,500 before the flop and the player in seat 8 made the call. The flop came 10 5 3 , and Smith let out with 3,000. Seat 8 called and the turn was the 2 . Both players checked and the river was the 7 . Once again both players checked and Smith turned over A Q for the queen-high flush. Smith raked the pot, breaking the 200,000 chip mark this hand.
The very next hand and Jeremiah Smith opened the pot with a raise to 2,500 from middle position and Stefan Mattsson defended his big blind with a call. The flop came 9 9 5 , and Mattsson checked to smith who bet 3,000. Mattsson folded and Smith raked another pot.
The next hand after that, the player from under the gun limped into the pot for 1,000 followed by Jeremiah Smith from early position and seat 8 from middle position. Walter Hall raised to 7,000 from late position and the action folded around back to Smith who made the call. The flop came 10 6 2 , and Smith checked to Hall who bet 6,000. Smith raised (check-raise) to 16,000 and Hall made the call. The turn was the 6 and Smith led out first, sliding a stack of orange chips (85,000) into the pot. Hall tanked for about four or five minutes, counting and recounting his stack until he finally mucked pocket jacks face-up. Smith raked his third consectutive pot, letting his table know who's boss as he brought his chip count up to 230,000 after the hand.
A Gorgeous Flop for Gazes
Bill Gazes and the player in seat 7 saw a flop of Q J 2 . Gazes checked and seat 7 fired 10,000 into the pot. Gazes smooth called and the turn came with the 5 . Seat 7 moved all in after Gazes checked. Gazes made the call and turned over 6 5 for a flopped diamond flush. Seat 7 showed A Q and was drawing dead when the J fell on the river. Gazes doubled up to 50,000.
Adams Forced Out
With four players in the hand, a flop of J 10 6 hit the felt. Brandon Adams fired 4,000 into the pot. The players in seat 7 and seat 8 got out of the way, but the player in seat 1 stuck around as he made the call. The turn was the 8 and seat 1 checked to Adams. Adams fired another shot, this one for 10,000. Seat 1 moved into action as he raised 25,000 more. Adams went into the tank for several minutes before mucking his hand. He was around 196,000 after surrendering the pot.
Poker Kat Scratched, Then Put Down
Kathy Liebert was in the big blind and the player in seat 2 was in the small blind as the two players saw a flop of J 4 2 . Liebert fired out a bet and was called by seat 2. The turn was the 3 and Liebert bet 6,000. Seat 2 made the call and the river was the 9 . Seat 2 led out this time, betting 13,000 into the pot. Liebert studied her opponent, looking at his stack and then at him directly. After much thought, she laid down her hand and was down to about 40,000.
Later, Liebert moved all in for her final 11,100 on a board showing Q Q 2 J A . Her opponent wasted little time calling, showing K 10 for a broadway straight on the river. Liebert showed Q 10 for a set of queens on the flop and she made her way toward the exit.
Boatman Loses One
Barny Boatman raised to 2,500 from late position and two players called. The flop came 9 3 2 and Boatman fired 3,500 after the action was checked to him. One player folded but the player in seat 6 hung around and the turn was the A . Both players checked and the 10 fell on the river. Boatman checked and seat 6 took control of the hand, firing 7,000. Big Hands and Storylines:
Everybody Loves Trite Headlines
For the second time in the 2008 WSOP main event, television/movie actor Ray Romano has drawn a seat at table 1 in the orange section of the Amazon room. It is good news for the fans, as that table is up against the ropes. They are also getting a good look at the actor, as he is down to just 9,000 in chips.
Jeff Williams Doubles Up
From middle position, Jeff Williams moved all-in for his final 8,800. After the dealer had counted down his stack, the player seated two seats to Williams’ left made the call. The two showed their hands:
Williams: A K
Opponent: 10 10
Williams took the lead on a A J 9 flop and it would hold up through the J turn and 6 river. The double up takes the former EPT Grand Final champion up to 19,000.
No Showdown Needed For Liebert
Action folded around to the player on the button who raised to 1,700. Kathy Liebert, in the small blind, raised it up to 4,900. The big blind folded and the woman on the button made the call with 12,000 behind. The flop came down Q Q 4 and Liebert led out for 5,000. Her opponent, after a bit of thought, made the call. On the 8 turn, Liebert threw out a pair of orange T5,000 chips, effectively setting the button all-in. The button quickly folded, leaving herself 7,000, and Liebert picked up the pot. That hand brings Liebert up to about 60,000.
Lindgren Loving Life’s Little Lifts
A player in middle position raised to 1,600 and the player to his immediate left made the call. The action folded to Erick Lindgren on the button, who made the call. The big blind called as well, and the four players saw a flop of 5 3 2 . The big blind checked, as did the original aggressor. The player to his left made a bet of 4,200 and Lindgren paused for a moment before raising to a total of 14,000. All players folded and Lindgren took down the pot, bringing his stack to over 80,000 in chips.
Lindgren Can’t Pull Trigger
A few hands later, Lindgren faced a huge decision. There was an early position raiser to 2100, and Lindgren made the call immediately behind him. The next player also called, then play was folded to Brandon Adams in the big blind. Adams, one of the tournament chip leaders, grabbed his stack of orange 5000 chips and sent them to the center of the table. The original raiser thought for about a minute, then folded. Lindgren, who had just recently been moved to the table, asked for a count, and was told the bill came to 105,000. Lindgren tanked, seemingly on the verge of making a huge call. He had about 120,000 in front of him, and eventually even asked his masseuse to hold off. Lindgren eventually made the reluctant lay down, and appeared visibly disturbed when, after the next player called for his remaining 16,000 in chips, Adams showed the A 9 . He was up against 7 6 , and took a minor hit to his stack when the board ran out 10 7 2 6 3 .
Rob Melnyk Out-Flushes Opponent, Improves Stack
A player in the cut-off raised to 1,800 and the player on the button called. Rob Melnyk called from the small blind, as did the player in the big blind. The flop came 10 7 6 , and the action checked to the cut-off who made a bet of 2,500. The button folded, and Melnyk made the call. After the big blind folded, the dealer put out the 8 on the turn. Melnyk checked, giving his opponent the opportunity to fire a bet of 8,000 into the pot. Melnyk made the call and the 3 fell on the river. Before Melnyk had the opportunity to act, his opponent fired a bet of 12,000. The dealer told Melnyk he would have an option, and Melnyk elected to check. His opponent’s 12,000 bet stayed in the pot, and Melnyk went into the tank. “I just call,” Melnyk announced and turned over K J for a king-high flush. His opponent nodded and turned over 10 9 for a ten-high flush. The dealer pushed the pot to Melnyk, who finished the hand with 88,000 in chips.
Mueller Eliminated
Greg Mueller was eliminated when his flopped set of queens was run down by a straight on the river.

Storylines/Big Hands:
Rousso Raises, Reconsiders, Releases
The player under-the-gun limped and so did the player to his left. Action folded around to Vanessa Rousso in the small blind who completed. The big blind checked and they saw a 4-way flop. The flop rolled out 8 6 3 and the first three players checked. The player in seat 8 bet 1,600 and was quickly raised by Rousso to 4,100 total. Action folded back around to the player in seat 9, who, after some deliberation, made the call. Rousso checked the 10 on the turn and her opponent bet 4,000. Rousso went into the tank. Shuffling, spinning and stacking her chips, “Lady Maverick” considered making a move. She thought better of it however, and laid the hand down. Despite losing the hand she still sits behind a stack of 41,000.
Bjorin Bouncing Back
Chris Bjorin has made a nice comeback in the latter stages of level four. Once down below 10,000 in chips, Bjorin now sits at just over 40,000, thanks in part to one recent hand. A player from early position raised to 900 and Bjorin called. The flop came A 6 5 , and after a check, Bjorin bet 1500. His opponent called. The turn was the 2 and both players checked. The board paired with the 6 on the river, and Bjorin led out for 2500. His opponent made the call and Bjorin showed A K . His opponent mucked.
Main Event a Loss for Hendon’s Ross
Noted Hendon Mob player Ross Boatman took his stand by getting all his chips into the pot pre-flop with A 3 . To Boatman’s disappointment, his opponent had him dominated with A Q . “Any three will do,” Boatman requested of the dealer as the flop was dealt. Boatman’s disappointment intensified as he gazed at a flop of K 7 2 . The J on the turn offered no help, and Boatman headed for the rail at the sight of the 10 on the river giving his opponent a needless straight.
Golser Getting it Done
Few players want to mess with Marcus Golser at his table, but at least one player survived an all-in battle with the pro from Austria. Golser has about 90,000 to dominate his table, and he’s been putting on a clinic. In one series of hands, he limped from under the gun for 300, and was then the lone caller after a raise to 1100 from middle position. The flop came 9 3 2 , and after Golser checked, his opponent bet 1100 and Golser called. That brought checks from both players when the 4 came on the turn. When the 6 came on the river, Golser led out for 3000 and his shortstacked opponent folded.
The next hand as the big blind, play was folded to the small blind who limped to see the flop come J 10 8 . After the small blind checked, Golser bet 400 and won the pot.
Then as the small blind, Golser saw one limper call for 300. He raised to 1700 and took it down uncontested.
It was only as the button that Golser hit a minor speed bump. A player from middle position raised to 900, and Golser went to 1700. His opponent reraised all-in for 9,925 and Golser called. The other player held J J , while Golser showed A K . The board finished 10 9 8 7 3 and Golser’s big stack took a minor hit.
Check and Raise Doesn’t Faze Kathy Liebert
While the Independence Day fireworks could be heard booming outside the Rio, Kathy Liebert saw fireworks of her own at table No. 17 in the orange section of the Amazon Room. Liebert raised to a total of 900 from under-the-gun and the action folded to the blinds. Both the small blind and the big blind called, and the dealer put down a flop of 6 4 3 . The action checked to Liebert, who continued her aggression by making a bet of 2,000. The small blind check-raised to a total of 5,000 and the big blind folded. After contemplating for a moment, Liebert reraised an additional 5,000. The small blind quickly mucked his cards with a highly frustrated sigh. Liebert’s stack stood at over 40,000 after the hand.
Kravchenko Flops a Five, Stays Alive
Alex Kravchenko flopped a set of fives and collected bets from his opponent on every street. The pot put Kravchenko’s stack above 25,000 for the first time this level.

Hands and Storylines:
Fricke gobbles up more chips
With the board J-T-7-8-K, Jimme Fricke made a large bet of 3,050. His opponent thought about whether to make the call for over. He kept looking at Fricke hoping for any clues, but Fricke was enjoying his massage and not offering any help. Finally he made the call and Fricke showed Q-9 for a king-high straight. After the hand Fricke had about 20,000 chips.
Antonio wins battle of blinds
Antonio Esfandiari, in the big blind, raised the small blinds bet of 425 to 1,050 on a flop a of 8-7-7. A six came on the turn, and Esfandiari made a bet of 1,700 after the small blind checked. He eventually folded, and Esfandiari was up to about 14,000 chips to end the level.
A Pro Play
A pair of preflop raises left play heads-up between the big blind and Mark Vos. The flop came A 5 3 , and when the Q hit the turn, the big blind checked again and Vos bet 1500. The blind called, to see the K on the river. The big blind checked, and Vos, listening to some sort of sixth sense, checked as well. He showed pocket queens for a set hit on the turn, but learned the big blind had pocket kings and rivered a better set.
Liebert Dodges Big Trouble
Kathy Liebert made the initial raise to 300, and the button called. The big blind then reraised to 1000 and Liebert folded while the button called. After a flop of 9 8 6 , the big blind bet 1000 and was raised to 2000 by the button. The big blind bet 2000 when the A hit the turn, and was then raised all-in by the button, who showed pocket eights for a set. The big blind held pocket jacks and went broke on the hand.
