Esfandiari Takes a Large Preflop Hit
Paul Wasicka bet 8,000 and Dan O'Brien raised to 23,000. Esfandiari reraised to 71,000 total, and Wasicka mucked. O'Brien then shoved all in and put Esfandiari on a decision for his tournament life. He eventually mucked and O'Brien took down the huge hand preflop. "Was that the right play, you're the expert," asked Esfandiari of Hoyt Corkins after the hand. This was the latest hand in a series of pots that have played out aggressively between O'Brien and Esfandiari. O'Brien has the upper hand so far, after leading for much of the day Esfadiari has been knocked down to 175,000.
Esfandiari Eliminated
Antonio Esfandiari moved all in preflop and Mike Sowers called him down. Esfandiari held A-K and Sowers A-Q. The board was dealt A-J-J-Q-3. Esfandiari was eliminated just short of the money after holding the chip lead for most of the tournament. This is a similar fate that he suffered at WPT Festa al Lago in late 2008.
Big Hands:
David Chiu Eliminated by Greg Mueller
On a flop of Q-J-8 David Chiu moved all in and Greg Mueller called him down. Chiu held A-10 and Mueller held Q-9. The turn and river bricked out and Chiu was knocked out of the tournament to start the last level of the night.
The Dragon Shows his Bluff
David Pham raised to 30,000 preflop after a series of players limped and then called a small raise to join a pot preflop. Three players mucked their hands and then Pham flipped up J 4 as he collected the pot.
Maria Ho Eliminates One
Maria Ho just knocked out a player with two kings in the hole. Her opponent held A-K but Ho's hand held to win the pot. Ho held 90,000 after the hand.
Dan Shak Eliminates One
Dan Shak moved all in preflop for 65,000 and seat 2 called all in against him. Shak had pocket jacks and seat 2 held pocket queens. A jack hit on the flop, and then a fourth came on the river to make quads for Shak and eliminate his opponent.
Slaubaugh vs. Grospellier
On a flop of Q 9 6 Cody Slaubaugh bet 15,500 from middle position and Bertrand Grospellier made the call from late position. The K fell on the turn and Slaubaugh bet 16,500. Grospellier made the call again and the 9 was dealt on the river. Both players checked and Slaubaugh turned up a bluff (4 2 ). Grospellier showed down A J and won the hand to increase his stack.
Money Bubble
As time expired during day 3 the tournament was stuck on the money bubble. Play went to hand-for-hand with 64 players remaining and it actually continued past the end of level 16. Day 3 will end when one more player busts out.

Level 4 Update
Feb 21, '09
Level: 4
Blinds: 100-200
Score Board
Players Left: 540 of 696
Notable Chip Counts
Bertrand Grospellier - 75,000
Daniel Negreanu - 63,000
Jeff Madsen - 54,000
Kofi Farkye - 54,000
Arthur Azen - 50,000
Amir Vahedi - 50,000
Average: 25,000
Big Hands:
The Suckout, Resuckout, Resuckout
Arthur Azen was all in holding top set of jacks against his opponent who held pocket kings. The turn brings a king which leaves Azen only one out in the deck and he gets it on the river, giving him quads and a stack of over 50,000 in chips.
Paul Wasicka Picks Up Chips
One-time LAPC Main Event final tablist Paul Wasicka is already off to a good start with a stack of over 45,000 in chips. Wasicka took most of his chips from Ralph Perry who held top pair, top kicker on a jack-high board. Wasicka held a set of sevens and they were good enough to take a very large pot and put him near the top of the leaderboard.
ElKy Coming On Strong
Though he was absent for most of the series, Bertrand "ElKy" Grospellier is off to a fine start here in the main event with a stack of 75,000. We haven't scanned the entire room, but that's good for the overall chip lead, at least among the notables.

Wasicka took most of his chips from Ralph Perry who held top pair, top kicker on a jack-high board. Wasicka held a set of sevens and they were good enough to take a very large pot and put him near the top of the leaderboard.

Seat 6: Mike Sowers

We caught this hand on the turn as Paul Wasicka faced off against Brett Richey. The board read A 6 5 7 and Wasicka checked. Richey bet 1,800 and Wasicka took some time before raising to 6,600. Richey made the call and the river was the 5 . Wasicka bet 13,000 and Richey quickly mucked, presumably on a draw.

Table Talk
Over at table 4, the low blinds and long levels have allowed Mike Matusow and his tablemates to do anything but play cards. A heated discussion about the current NFL season kicked off, with Matusow taking strong opinions on everything from new Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh to the lack of separation between today's top kickers. Matusow is joined at the table by Scott Seiver, Steve Billirakis, Markus Gonzalves and Chris Bush.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Nick’s Tricks Net Nix Chips
Nick Schulman raised to 1,200 from the cut-off in an open pot. The action folded to the player in the big blind who made the call. The flop came J 8 5 , and both players checked. The 6 generated a bet of 3,000 from the player in the big blind, and Schulman instantly jettisoned his hand into the muck. Schulman finished the hand with 80,000 in chips.
Wasicka Watches Worries Wash Away with Aces
Paul Wasicka successfully doubled up and survived elimination yet again, this time courtesy of pocket aces. The action folded to Wasicka, who pushed all in pre-flop for his remaining 4,500 from the cut-off. The button and small blind folded, and the big blind instantly called and turned over A J . Wasicka revealed his A A , and the board ran 8 8 7 6 2 . Wasicka finished the hand with slightly less than 20,000 in chips.
Pat’s Jacks Axe Stacks
Patrick Antonius raised to 1,600 from middle position, and the next player to act reraised to a total of 4,500. The action folded back to Antonius who moved all in for his remaining additional 9,000. His opponent made the call and turned over 8 8 , the underdog to Antonius’ J J . The board ran K 6 6 6 4 , and Antonius finished the hand with 25,000.
Demetriou runs into aces and is out
Harry Demetriou raised to 2,100 from early position and was reraised to 6,200 total. He made the call and the two players saw a 8-6-4 flop with two spades. After Demetriou checked his opponent bet 12,000. After a minute Demetriou raised all in for 24,225 more. His opponent took a couple minutes before calling with pocket aces. Demetriou had pocket tens and the turn and river didn't help him.
Shulman Forced to Fold
Barry Shulman was in the big blind and called a preflop raise to 1600 from a player in middle position. The flop came Q Q 8 , and both players checked. The 2 followed on the turn, and after Shulman checked, he called a bet of 5000. A third queen hit the river with the Q appearing, and after Shulman checked his opponent bet 10,000. Shulman, with about 50,000 in chips, laid his hand down.
Vos Adds to Stack
Mark Vos raised from early position to 1300 and drew two calls including one from the player in the cut-off. The Q 10 9 flop brought two checks, and the cut-off bet 3000, which Vos called. The two were heads-up to see the 5 come on the turn, and both players checked. The A was the scare card on the river and now Vos led out for 7000. His opponent folded. Vos is at the same table as television/movie actor Ray Romano, though playing in the red section of the Amazon room means the table will be among the next to be broken.
Myung Survives All-in
John Myung was in the small blind for 250, and saw a player in late position raise to 2000. Myung, with only 8500 in chips remaining, used this opportunity to move all-in. Play folded to the raiser, who needed to call 6500 to force a showdown. But with just over 21,000 in chips, he elected to lay his hand down.
Bill Continues to Drill
On a board of 10 9 4 2 , Bill Gazes fired a bet of 6,500, causing his two opponents to fold their cards. Gazes finished the hand with 25,000 in chips.
Paul Pushes
Paul Wasicka successfully doubled up, but still remains at fewer than 25,000 in chips. After the player on the button limped into the pot, Wasicka raised and the big blind folded. The button made the call, and the flop came queen high with two clubs. Wasicka pushed in his remaining 6,000 and the button made the call. Wasicka held K-Q, while his opponent held K 8 . The K on the turn was effectively a blank for Wasicka, reducing his opponent’s outs by one (the Q ). The river was a heart, and Wasicka won the pot.
Friedman loses big chunk of his stack
On a A K J flop Perry Friedman bet 3,600 and was called by one player. The turn was the A and Friedman bet 4,500. He was again called, and then the T came on the river. This time Friedman checked, and his opponent bet 11,000. Friedman was not happy with his stuation but eventually made the call. His opponent flipped over pocket jacks for a full house to beat Friedman's A-Q for trips. After the hand Friedman had less than 30,000 chips.

The Ups and Downs of Paul Wasicka
On a board of A 5 2 4 , the player in seat 1 bet 1,000 and Wasicka made the call. Another player in the hand mucked his cards the the two players were heads up heading to the river. It came down with the 9 and seat 1 bet 2,000. Wasicka called again and seat 1 asked, "you got a straight?" Wasicka nodded and turned over 3 3 for the wheel and he scooped a pot to get his stack back over 20,000.
A few hands later, the player in seat 6 raised to 1,050. Wasicka made the call from the big blind and the flop came 9 3 2 . Wasicka checked and seat 6 bet 1,325. Wasicka made the call and the turn was the 4 . Both players checked and they did the same when the J came on the river. Wasicka showed 7 7 and his opponent showed 9 8 for top pair and the pot. Wasicka was at 15,000 after the hand.

Turner raised an additional 2,100 and seat 8 pushed all in. Turner called instantly and showed J 10 while seat 8 showed A Q . The turn was the 3 and the river was the 3 . Turner eliminated seat 8 and was around 50,000.
Morgan Involved in Two Big Hands
Jordan Morgan raised to 1,800 preflop and both seat 2 and seat 7 made the call. The flop came 9 6 3 and Morgan fired 3,500. Seat 2 folded but seat 7 stuck around, making the call. The turn was the 9 and both players checked. The river brought the 9 and Morgan fired 9,750. Seat 7 went into the tank for almost five minutes. He finally called and Morgan tabled J J . Seat 7 mucked and Morgan took the huge pot.
A few hands later, the board read 9 7 6 K , seat 1 and seat 4 both moved all in before the action even got to Morgan. Morgan made the call, having both men covered. Seat 1 showed 6 6 for a set. Seat 2 showed Q 10 for a made flush along with a gutshot straight flush draw. Morgan turned over 8 7 for a lower flush, as well as a straight flush draw. The river brought the J , giving seat 4 his straight flush, not that he needed it. Seat 1 was eliminated and Morgan was around 60,000.
Anna Wroblewski Doubles Up, Eliminates Lenny Cortelino

On a flop of Q 4 3 , Lenny Cortellino checked to Anna Wroblewski who bet 6,100. Cortellino raised (check-raised) to 12,100 and Wroblewski moved all in. Cortellino insta-called and turned over Q Q for top set while Wroblewski showed A A for the overpair and the nut flush draw. Wroblewski had Cortellino slightly covered. The turn was the 9 , giving Wroblewski her flush and reducing Coretllino to pairing the board to stay alive. The river was the 2 , no pair and Cortellino hit the rail. After the hand, Wroblewski nearly doubled up to just over 60,000 in chips.
Shulman Keeps Rolling
Action folded around to the button who raised to 900. Barry Shulman made the call from the small blind and the flop came A 4 3 and Shulman checked. The player on the button fired a continuation bet of 1,500 and Shulman made the call. The turn was the 2 and Shulman led out for 2,000. The button looked confused and mucked his hand. $10,000 Main Event - The Early Going
Jul 03, '08
Blinds/Antes: 50-100
Big Hands:
Jason Alexander on Broadway?
Jason Alexander limped into a pot from late position and the player in the cutoff raised to 400. Action folded back around to Alexander who made the call. The flop came K Q J , and both players checked. The turn was the 10 , and Alexander fired 500 into the pot. The player in the cutoff folded his hand and Alexander raked the pot.
Eric Froehlich Caught Lying
With plenty of money in the pot on a board of A 7 5 J 5 , Eric Froehlich fired out a 3,300 bet on the river. His opponent in seat 4 tanked for a few minutes before making the call. Froehlich instantly threw his cards into the muck, conceding the hand as a confused seat 4 raked the pot. There was a little banter over whether or not seat 4 had to show his hand considering that Froehlich mucked, but in the end seat 4 briefly flashed his cards before the floor person could get there to make an official ruling.
Wasicka With An Early Pot
On a board reading 8 8 2 9 , Paul Wasicka bet 600 and his opponent in seat 8 called. The river was the A and both players decided to check. Wasicka then showed down 6 6 for two pair and his opponent threw his hand in the muck. Wasicka took a nice sized pot and was up around 24,000.
Galfond Moved Off His Hand
After a flop came down 8 6 3 , the player in seat 1 bet 450. Phil Galfond raised to 1,175 and his opponent repopped it for 3,000 more. Galfond went in the tank and decided to lay his hand down. He was down to around 19,000 after the hand.
The Girl Next Door
In a huge field like this one, it is rare to look around and find a familiar face. But that is not the case for David Benyamine. He is sitting in seat 1 at table 39 in the orange section of the Amazon Room. One table over at table 38, his fiance Erica Schoenberg was sitting in seat 2. The same is true for Barry Shulman over in the blue section as his wife Allyn Jaffrey Shulman is sitting one table over.

Froehlich instantly threw his cards into the muck, conceding the hand as a confused seat 4 raked the pot.
