Left In The Deck:
Al Barbieri Yells his Opinion
A shouting match recently erupted over at table 26 between Al "Sugar Bear" Barbieri and Ryan Young. Young was involved in a hand and asked his opponent, "You don't want to knock me out, do you?"
This table talk upset Barbieri who felt that Young was inducing a particular action with his words. Most of the table came to Young's defense and agreed he had done nothing wrong, but an irrate Barbieri continued the rant anyway. Tournament Director Matt Savage came over and agreed that Young never disclosed the contents of his hand and did nothing wrong. Order was restored and play continued, albeit with more tension than before.

Storylines/Big Hands
Cards were in the air a little after the scheduled start time as tournament officials moved the tournament to the Brasilia Room and players were still finding their seats as the event began.
Elizabeth Misses Draw
Shannon Elizabeth had the bring-in with the 5 , and was called by three players. Elizabeth added the K on fourth street to take the betting lead, and added the 6 on fifth street. The player to her left had drawn an ace and bet out 100, and when action came to Elizabeth she raised to 200, which drew three calls. Elizabeth added the 4 on sixth street, and the same pattern played out again, with one player folding. Seat 3, to Elizabeth's left, showed Q 6 A 3 , while seat 1 showed J 8 3 5 . Play was checked after the final card was dealt, and Elizabeth showed A-K-10, a missed low draw and a pairs of kings for high. Seat 1 held 5-2-2 for two pair and swept the pot.
Judah Spills Early
Mel Judah was in a heads-up battle, and on the surface appeared in OK shape. He showed A-K-K-Q while his opponent showed 9-10-J-2. But Judah was called to the end before being raised, when his opponent showed 9-9-2 in the hole for a full house.
Barbieri Misses Out
Al Barbieri, who claimed second in the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud straight high event earlier in the WSOP, was showing 3 4 4 Q and bet with his pair of fours until sixth street. Seat 3 was showing 4 3 2 3 , while seat 7 showed 8 7 A 7 . Sixth and seventh street was checked by all three players, and seat 7 won the high hand with aces and sevens while seat 3 took down the low.

$1,500 Stud - Michael Rocco Wins Event No. 35
Jun 20, '08
Michael Rocco Wins Event No. 35 ($135,753)
After grinding Al Barbieri down to his last few pink chips, all it took was a pair of kings to send him to the rail in second place. After realizing his pair had held, Rocco bursted into celebration, screaming with joy. As tears streamed down his face, he spoke about his victory for his five-year-old son. In a time where some bracelet winners take the prestige for granted, it was nice to see a man unafraid to show the world how much the win truly meant to him.
Barbieri earned $83,210 for his runner-up finish.

Al Barbieri Takes Over
Three handed play has been nice to Barbieri, who has been slowly chipping up and has a big lead over his opponents. Charles Moore had bet fourth and fifth street showing J J 3 . All-in, Kalpakis showed wired aces for three of a kind, while Moore showed the J for trips of his own. Big Hands:
Barbieri Straightens Up
Al Barbieri drove the action and had two passengers for the majority of the journey, which allowed him to chip back into contention in level 13. Barbieri completed the bring-in to 1500 and had three callers. He called a bet on fourth street and fifth street before taking over the betting on sixth street. With all the up-cards accounted for, Barbieri showed 8 4 9 10 . He made another bet on seventh street when action was checked to him, and George Brand was in a quandry. Barbieri had committed all but his final 500 in chips into the monster pot. Brand, showing 9 10 J 2 , reluctantly made the call. In seat 1, the player showing 6 10 J 3 who had called the distance, finally mucked. Barbieri then flipped over his hole cards -- 4 6 7 for the straight, good for the victory.
Sabyl the Aggressor
Sabyl Landrum had the bring-in with the 2 , and was up against two players. She added the 7 on fourth street, which was good enough for a check-raise to 3000, which drew both callers. The A hit her on fifth street and she took the betting lead, which got one player to fold, then added the 6 and bet again. Down to one opponent, Soroosh Sirang was showing 9 4 10 8 . He stepped out of the way on sixth street and Landrum won the pot.
Rose Fills Up
Roy Rose was heads-up with Chad Brown, calling a completion then pairing his deuce on fifth street. He showed 2 J 2 4 after the final cards were dealt, while Brown held 8 4 3 A . Rose then showed his hole cards to include pocket jacks and he took the pot with a full house.
Un'set'tling Times
A short-stacked opponent was all-in following fourth street while showing 4 10 . He would later add the 4 and have another four in the hole for trips, but that wouldn't survive. Ed Fernandez and Charles Moore continued to butt heads, Fernandez showing 5 2 K through fifth street, and Moore with K 5 6 when he was all-in. When the hole cards were revealed, Fernandez had struck with his pocket fives in the hole, while Moore connected with his pocket sixes on fifth street. His call, and the subsequent victory, didn't sit well with his opponent, and verbal warnings were given by tournament officials.

Big Hands and Story Lines:
Michael Rocco's Two Pair No Good
The chip leader coming into the day has been going backwards to start out this final table. After bringing it in with a 5 showing, Rocco stuck around to make fives up on seventh street. Unfortunately for him, Al Barbieri made jacks up to scoop a decent sized pot.
Danny Kalpakis Doubles Up
Kalpakis got his last 22,000 all in on third street with a pair of split queens against Levon Torosyan's split pair of aces. Torosyan never improved and Kalpakis caught a third queen along with a pair of jacks as his full house doubled him up to 50,000 in chips.
Max Troy Doubles Up
Troy was all in on sixth street holding just a pair of sixes against Al Barbieri's ace high. Barbieri squeezed out seventh street to see he made a pair of kings, but Troy's squeeze revealed another ten to make two pair and double up.

Jun 19, '08
Players came back from a 20-minute break still playing 12-handed, needing four eliminations to create the final table for the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event. After 20 minutes of frantic action, the final table had been accounted for. The final table begins Friday at 3 p.m. PST.
Players left: 8 of 381
Average Stack: 127,000
Chip Leaders:
Michael Rocco - 255,000
Al Barbieri - 252,500
Jeff Siegal - 150,000
Giacomo D'Agostino - 123,000
Levon Torosyan - 114,500

Andre Boyer - 86,000
Danny Kalpakis - 55,000
Eliminations: Charles Moore (ninth); Roy Rose (10th); Bryan Devonshire (11th); Sabyl Landrum (12th).
Storylines/Big Hands
Kalpakis Survives Tense All-in
The final eight is determined, but short-stack Danny Kalpakis was one card away from being eliminated just minutes earlier. He was all-in for his final 23,000 after fifth street, showing A 9 7 . Charles Moore had bet fourth and fifth street showing J J 3 . All-in, Kalpakis showed wired aces for three of a kind, while Moore showed the J for trips of his own. Moore hit a trey on sixth street to fill up and seemingly eliminate Kalpakis, but the short-stack hit the 9 with his final card for a bigger full house to remain alive.
Torosyan Makes it Official
Once Moore was shortstacked, Levon Torosyan put him away with a tough call. Moore was showing K K through fourth street when he was all-in for his final 15,500. Torosyan was showing 9 Q , but elected to make the call with 9-Q in the hole as well. He hit the Q on sixth street to fill up, and Moore missed with his final outs.
Rose Out in 10th
Roy Rose was all-in for his last 6500 in chips on fourth street, showing 9 4 . He paired with the 4 on fifth street, but that was as far as he got. Al Barbieri, who opened with 10 9 , had 10 Q in the hole, then ran out 6-7-8 for the straight.
Devonshire, Landrum Eliminated
Bryan Devonshire was drawing to a deuce after sixth street, having A 3 4 5 while Barbieri had two pair, jacks-up. Barbieri was dealt the deuce Devonshire needed with his final card.
Landrum fell victim to Rose, Landrum with K Q K Q through fourth street and all-in, while Rose had A J J J . Rose filled with an ace for his last card.

Michael Rocco - 68,000
Levon Torosyan - 63,000
Sabyl Landrum - 60,000
Chad Brown - 59,000
Charlie Townsend - 55,000
Roy Rose - 53,000

Big Hands:
Master Busts
Men Nguyen was eliminated when his pair of jacks failed to improve against Max Troy's pair of queens.
Barbieri Diving
Al Barbieri continued his string of erratic play. In one hand, after George Brand bet all the way down showing 9 3 10 2 , Barbieri called the whole way with K 5 7 J . After the last down card was dealt, Barbieri led out for 2,000 and Brand made the call. "Ace high," said Barbieri, and Bran rolled overa nine and a three for nines up.
The next hand, Barbieri again called down an opponent, Chris Tryba this time, with J 8 10 A . His opponent had Q 4 7 6 showing, and rolled over the Q and 4 for queens up. Barbieri showed two kings in the whole and mucked his hand. He's down to about 25,000 after starting the day with the chip lead.
Moore Doubles Up
Charles Moore was all in after fifth street with K J K 3 2 and behind his opponent's A A J 9 10 but caught a 3 on the river to make kings up and double through. Moore has about 17,000.

Big Hands:
The Nature of the Game
Mike Sici had a bad feeling when the 7 hit on the turn. His A A were still ahead of Christian Closson's K K , but after a flop of Q 7 3 , the turn had given Closson some much-needed outs. Still it wasn't a spade that did Sici in, but a diamond: the K on the river gave Closson the winning hand, and a pot worth more than 18,000. Sici plummeted to less than 3,000. Still, he seemed to recover quickly, philosophizing, "That's the nature of the game."
Runner Boy
Jimmy "gobboboy" Fricke speculated on a flop of Q 6 3 with 1,100 and was called by his small blind opponent. The turn brought the 10 and checks from both players. When the 5 hit on the river, the small blind checked and Fricke bet 3,100, causing his opponent to removed his sunglasses and rub his eyes. He was even more uncomfortable when he made the call and saw Fricke's hand: 10 5 for runner runner two pair. Fricke is up to more than 25,000.
Sugar Bear Makes Sweet Call
Barbieri's opponent opened with a 2,000 chip bet on a flop of 6 3 2 and Barbieri called. When the 9 hit on the turn, she wasted no time in pushing all in her last 7,500--enough to cover Barbieri, who called, somewhat remarkably, with 8 6 , for a pair of sixes, and in the lead against his opponent's A 8 . The 5 spades came on the turn, shipping Barbieri a pot worth more than 15,000, as well as new life in the tournament.
Players are now on twenty minutes break.

Pot-Limit Hold'em - Jacobo Fernandez Tops 1 Million
Jun 04, '08
Blinds: 6,000-12,000
Players Left: 7
Chip Leaders:
Jacobo Fernandez - 1,100,000
David Singer - 350,000
Gregory Alston - 270,000
Robby Lipkin - 237,000
Joe Tehan - 200,000
Zachary King - 70,000
Russell Harriman - 65,000
Eliminations: Al Barbieri (8th Place)
Storylines:
Al Barbieri took a bad beat against Greg Alston and was forced to get the rest of his chips in on the short stack. Singer busted him and Barbieri was eliminated in eighth place.
Jacobo Fernandez has continued to defend his blinds at will and pick up big pot uncontested. With constant pressure, he has put a great deal of distance between himself and second place.
Big Hands:
Greg Alston Sucks Out To Double Up
Al Barbieri raised in late position and Greg Alston reraised out of the blinds. Barbieri put his opponent all in and Alston reluctantly made the call, showing pocket jacks. Barbieri confirmed his suspicions by turning over pocket queens. Things were looking good on a eight-high flop for Barbieri, but a jack on the turn gave new life to a very happy Alston. Barbieri wasn't exactly feeling the same way and after the hand, sat at just under 50,000.
Al Barbieri Can't Catch Up, Eliminated in Eighth Place ($26,764)
Al Barbieri got the rest of his stack in with K 6 against David Singer's A Q . The board rolled out A 9 2 4 10 and Sugar Bear was busted in eighth place, earning $26,764.
Tehan Takes Some From King
Zach King raised to 29,000 under the gun and got a call from Joe Tehan in the blinds. The flop came J 6 5 and King continued with a bet of 37,000. Tehan called and the turn was the 10 . This time around, Tehan bet 45,000 and King thought for a bit before calling. The river was the K and Tehan bet almost enough to put King all in. King thought for a long while, then decided to fold and save his remaining 84,000.
Jacobo Fernandez Tops 1 Million in Chips
Tehan didn't hold on to his chips for long, after giving roughly roughly 200,000 over to Jacobo Fernandez and his turned full house. This was one of the first hands that Fernandez had shown down, even though he is already up to 1.1 million in chips.

Robby Lipkin - 245,000
Gregory Alston - 180,000
Zachary King - 175,000
Russell Harriman - 90,000
Eliminations: Glen Bean (9th Place)
Storylines:
David Singer doubled up twice to end the first level of the day, then got involved in a big pot with Greg Alston.
Zachary Clark doubled up through Russ Harriman to stay alive.
Big Hands:
David Singer Doubles Up.... Twice
On a flop of Q 5 3 Greg Alston put David Singer all in for just under 70,000 and Singer made the call, showing A Q . Alston turned over J J and failed to catch his two-outer when the turn and river came 10 3 . That pot brought Singer up to 162,000, which he used for his next double up a few hands later.
Singer raised it up to 22,000 under the gun and got a call from Al Barbieri on the button. The flop came down Q 3 2 and Singer bet 40,000. Barbieri called and the 8 hit the turn. This time Singer moved all in for about 100,000 and Barbieri called, turning over K Q , which was behind to Singer's pocket aces. The A on the river didn't change anything and Singer doubled up once again to about 325,000.
Singer Gives Some Back
Singer vaulted into second place with his two double ups, but gave some of it back on a hand with Greg Alston. Alston raised to 27,000 preflop and Singer made the call in the big blind. The flop came A 9 4 and both players checked. The turn was the J and Singer led for another 27,000. Alston moved all in for another 113,000 and Singer took a few moments before letting his hand go.
Zachary "CKingUSC" CKing Doubles Up
With a rail that included online notables Vivek "psyduck" Rajkumar, Shaun Deeb and Chris "cdbr3799" Dombrowksi, Zachary Clark had been getting anxious to get his chips in the middle. A situation finally presented itself after a series of preflop raises with Russ Harriman and King's pocket jacks held up against Harriman's pocket nines to keep him in contention with 170,000.
Glen "Miss Pretty" Bean Eliminated in Ninth Place ($19,646)
Glen Bean hung around on the short stack for quite some time before being forced to get it in with J-8 against Zachary Kings's A-Q. Bean caught an eight on the flop to give him some hope, but an ace on the river sent him packing. Bean earned $19,646 for his efforts.

Gregory Alston - 179,000
Zachary King - 139,000
David Singer - 83,000
Glen Bean - 75,000
Eliminations: None
Storylines:
Joe Tehan has fallen from the chip leader position after losing several early confrontations, most notably with Al "SugarBear" Barbieri.
Big Hands:
Joe Tehan Falters Early
Play has been relatively cautious, but on hand no. 5, Joe Tehan raised to 20,000 and Greg Alston made the call on the button. The flop came J 9 7 and Tehan checked. Alston bet 26,000 and Tehan made the call. The turn was the 6 and Tehan checked once again. This time, Alston fired out 41,000 and Tehan was forced to muck his hand.
Jacobo Fernandez Defends His Blinds
It seems like blinds will be tough to steal from new chip leader Jacobo Fernandez. Each time someone has raised him, he has come over the top to shut it down.
Al Barbieri Wins a Monster Pot
In the first real showdown of the day, Al Barbieri limped in early position and Joe Tehan reraised to 28,000 from the small blind. Barbieri decided to call and both players saw a flop of K Q 6 . Tehan checked, and Barbieri bet 40,000. Tehan then check raised to 102,000 and Barbieri just called. The turn put three diamonds on the board when it came the 4 and Tehan decided to check. Barbieri instantly went all in for 153,000, and Tehan frustratedly mucked his cards. Barbieri showed pocket aces with the A as he took the pot.
After the hand, Barbieri was up to around 425,000 and Tehan was down to 265,000.

Eliminations: Ryan Fair
Storylines:
Players were still foraging with toothpicks and working on their dinner mints when the curtain came down on the 10-handed portion of play in the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold'em tournament at the World Series of Poker on Tuesday.
After considerable debate between players about whether to break for dinner or continue to a final elimination, the meal won out. Upon their return, it took all of two-hands to determine the nine players who will comprise the field for the final table on Wednesday.
Big Hands:
Barbieri Completes the Field
Al Barbieri raised to 28,000 from middle position, before Ryan Fair re-raised to 70,000. It took almost half of Barbieri's stack to make the call, which he did without much hesitation. The flop came down Q Q 10 , and Barbieri committed his remaining 64,000 in chips to the center. Fair followed with his remaining 55,000 to be all in. Barbieri showed he had flopped a monster -- A Q for trips. Fair showed J J . The turn and river brought no help and Fair was eliminated.
Mr. Bean Survives a Fall
In the first hand when play commenced, Glen Bean limped from the cut-off, while David Singer limped from the button. Robert Lipkin completed the trifecta from the small blind, while the big blind was dead money as Russell Harriman hadn't returned from the break. The flop came down J 5 5 and Lipkin checked to Bean who bet 15,000. Singer folded and Lipkin made the call. The turn brought the A and was checked by both players, then Bean bet out 50,000 when Lipkin checked after the 6 came on the river. Lipkin made the call and showed J 10 , while Bean was caught making a move with the Q 2 . Bean lost half of his 150,000 stack in the hand, before Fair busted out on the next deal.
Tehan Back From the Brink
Joe Tehan knew he was capable, but was the first to admit he would need help to reach the final stages of the tournament. He caught a two-outter on the river to stay alive on Day 1 of the event, and was sitting at just 8,000 in chips when Day 2 began. Average stack was just shy of 34,000.
Now he will begin final table play as the chip leader, with a stack of 458,000 in chips.
"The deck kind of ran for me early on, but it had too, I was so short-stacked," said Tehan. "I got 10s early, aces, kings, kings.
"I'm not all that surprised (to reach the final table). Pot limit is the kind of structure, especially without any antes, even with five or six big blinds you can still wait and be patient."
Tehan, who calls Vegas home, has made his first World Series of Poker final table. He played 14 events last year and had four cashes, including finishes of 13th and 15th. He also won a World Poker Tour title in 2006 at the Mandalay Bay Poker Championship.
