Just previously, Makhija held only 5425 in chips when he was the big blind. Play was folded to the button who raised to 900, and Makhija had enough chips to scare off his opponent with an all-in. The move brought him to 6650 in chips. Then two hands later as the button, Makhija watched as the player in the cut-off put in an initial raise to 725. Again Makhija pushed all-in, and again his opponent folded in the face of the move.
The next hand spelled his doom, however. From the cut-off Makhija raised to 900, and the big blind was the lone caller. The flop came A Q J , the big blind checked, and Makhija bet 1200. The big blind called the bet, and together they saw the 9 hit the turn. The big blind checked, Makhija bet 3200, and the big blind then check-raised to put Makhija all-in. Makhija made the instant call, showing A Q . But the big blind had filled his straight, holding 10 8 . Needing an ace or queen on the river to stay alive, Makhija saw the 3 come down and end his main event.
Lisandro Loves His Luck, Later Loses
Despite patiently nursing a short stack throughout most of the level, Jeffrey Lisandro ultimately ended up with a one-way ticket to the rail after a successful double up. Lisandro first got it all in with 4 4 for his last 2,800 against his opponent’s Q J . The flop was beautiful for Lisandro, bringing J 10 4 . The 2 on the turn had his opponent drawing dead, and Lisandro collected his chips.
Within two hands, Lisandro again got his chips back into the middle against the same opponent, this time while holding AsQs against his opponent’s K K . The flop brought another set with K 5 4 , and the 8 on the turn this time had Lisandro drawing dead. Lisandro made his exit.
Moneymaker drops some chips, but going strong
With the board Q 5 5 K 8 , Chris Moneymaker and his opponent both checked. His opponent flipped over A 8 and Moneyaker mucked. The pot had just a few thousand in it, and Moneymaker currently has around 70,000 chips.
Gowen's small bluff fails
With the board A 9 8 4 8 , Clonie Gowen bet 3,000 and her opponent called. Gowen immediately mucked her hand, and though he didn't need to her opponent showed A 7 . After the hand Gowen was up to 60,000 chips.
Devonshire out, Mattern takes chip lead
On a T 8 6 flop, a series of back-and-forth raises ends with Bryan Devonshire all in and Arnaud Mattern right there with him in a monster pot. They both hold 9-7, but Mattern's cards are spades giving him a flush draw. And what do you know -- it made a difference. After the A on the turn, the A came on the river to give Mattern the pot and give him 155,000 chips.
Don’t Mess with Singer
A player in middle position raised to 1000 and David Singer, one of the chip leaders of the day, called from the button, as did the big blind. The flop came K Q 2 , the big blind checked, and the original raiser bet out 1600. Singer made the call and the big blind folded. The J hit the turn and his opponent came out for 2500. Singer then put in a reraise to 7000. His opponent then mucked his hand.
Boredom for some
It's the main event and there are millions at stake, but for some players the slow pace of play creates the need for distractions. Nenad Medic has been playing solitare on his ipod and David Benefield has been reading a book. But it looks like they're also playing some good poker when the time calls for it; Medic and Benefield have 90,000 and 60,000 chips, respectively.

Big Hands:
Makhija Runs Into Bullets
Amit Makhija raised to 600 from the cutoff before the flop. Seat 9 called from the button and the player in seat 1 reraised to 1,700 from the small blind. Action came back to Makhija, who made the call. Seat 9 got out of the way and the flop came down J 10 6 . Seat 1 led out with 3,000 and Makhija made the call. The turn paired the board as the J hit the felt. Seat 1 thought for a long time before deciding to move all in for 10,200. Makhija took his own time to think, but he eventually called and showed 9 9 . Seat 1 turned over A A and Makhija was in trouble. He needed to hit a two-outer to take the pot, but the 8 fell on the river and Makhija trasported almost half of his stack to seat 1. He started the hand with almost 27,000 in chips and ended it with just 12,000.
Le Gets Pushed Out
Nam Le raised to 650 before the flop from middle position. The player in seat 4 made the call from the hijack position and everyone else folded. The flop came down 10 10 5 and Le fired a continuation bet of 800. Seat 4 immediately made his move as he pushed all in for 5,025 more. Le went in the tank as camera crews rushed over to the table. Le looked at his hand a couple of times and finally mucked. He was down to 28,000.
Cloutier Sends His Opponent's Ladies into the Muck
T.J. Cloutier raised to 600 from middle position preflop and seat 4 made the call from the button. The player in seat 6 also called from the big blind and everyone saw a flop of 10 8 7 . Cloutier fired 1,000 into the pot of 1,800 and the button called. The player in the big blind got out of the way and the 4 came on the turn. Cloutier kept up his aggression as he fired 3,000 into the pot. The button turned over his hand, Q Q , and released it into the muck. "I'll let you win this hand," he told Cloutier. "Oh, you had me beat," Cloutier says as he showed the 10 . Regardless, Cloutier raked in the pot and improved to 14,000 in chips.
Quack, Quack, Quack
In a limped four-way pot, the flop came J 2 2 . Action checked to the player in seat 6 who fired 600. John D'Agostino made the call and the other players folded. The turn brought the 5 and both players checked. When the 4 fell on the river, D'Agostino bet 1,500 and his opponent made the call. D'Agostino showed K 2 for a set of ducks. His opponent mucked and D'Agostino's stack grew to about 40,000.
Medic Doubles Up
Nenad Medic raised to 600 preflop and was called by the player in the big blind. The flop came down 8 3 2 . Medic bet 1,000 after the big blind checked. The big biind then check-raised to 2,500. Medic repopped to 6,000 and the big blind put Medic all in. Medic called and showed 8 3 , ahead of his opponent's 9 9 . The turn was the Q and the river was the 5 and Medic doubled up to around 24,000.
We Told You Not to Play With Sam Farha
A player in middle position raised to 700 and Farha made the call. The player on the button jumped in as well and the flop came down Q 8 6 . The initial bettor checked, as did Farha. The button then fired 1,100 into the pot. The initial bettor folded and Farha raised to 4,100. The button looked at Farha, frowned, nodded, looked at his hand and threw it into the muck. Farha was up to 45,000.
Online Poker LIve at the WSOP
The Brasilia Room has apparently been designated as the "online room." Players like Chad "lilhodem954" Batista, Adam "Roothlus" Levy, Jonathan "driverseati" Tamayo, David Benefield and Philip "uscphildo" Collins are all going to work there.
Chad Batista Hammered Down By Big Slick
After Batista raised to 550 preflop, another player pushed all in for 3,000. Batista made the call and showed Q J . His opponent turned over big slick, A K and hit the flop of K 7 4 . Batista needed running cards to win the pot, but the K on the turn sealed the deal and Batista was drawing dead. The meaningless river was the 6 and Batista dropped to around 9,000 in chips.
Collins Picked Off
Collins was involved in a hand where he bet 1,000 on a board of K 7 4 6 . He was called by the player in seat 2. When the J hit on the river, Collins fired 3,500 and seat 2 went into the tank. He eventually said that he couldn't put Collins on a real hand so he made the call. Collins showed 6 5 for a pair of sixes. Seat 2 showed K 8 for top pair to rake in the pot. After the loss, Collins had around 20,000.
Teltscher Teaches Tiffany A Lesson
Brit Mark Teltscher was a match for Tiffany Michelle's aggression when he called every bet on ever street including 4,000 on the river. The board read A-A-K-7-2 and Teltscher went into the tank finally calling. Michelle looked a little downbeat. "You got an Ace?" she asked and went to muck her cards. Teltscher flipped over A-3 for trip aces and Michelle's bluff had gone badly awry. After the hand she was down to 34,000 and the Englishman was up to 26,000.

In the Money!
The tournament director announced that the remaining players are all in the money, and the entire Amazon Room burst into a round of cheer and applause.
Amit Takes a Hit
The player under-the-gun limped and the action folded to Amit Makhija in the cut-off. Makhija raised to 4,700, and the player on the button pushed all in for his remaining 18,500. The action folded to the original limper, who debated heavily before releasing his hand. Amit called and turned over A K , a statistical dead heat against his opponent’s Q Q . The flop came Q 5 4 , a disaster for Makhija, giving his opponent top set. The 10 on the turn caused Humberto Brenes to attempt to cheer up his tablemate by saying, “Hey! Now you’ve got outs!” The 2 on the river failed to make a straight for Makhija, who lost over half of his stack on the hand. He was left with just under 15,000 in chips as level 10 continued.

Williams Takes A Hit, Then Knocked Out
David Williams raised to 600 preflop. Amit Makhija made the call and then the player in seat 4 moved all in for 4,125 more. The action was back on Williams who instantly called. Makhija got out of the way and the hands were turned up. Williams had A K while his opponent turned over 9 9 . The board ran out 7 7 3 10 2 and Williams' stack took a big hit. He was down to 6,500 at that point and busted out a short time later.
Devil Fish Reels One In
Dave "Devil Fish" Ulliot raised to 500 before the flop and the player in seat 4 made the call from the big blind. The flop was 6 5 3 and seat 4 checked. Ulliot applied the pressure, betting 1,000. His opponent mucked and Ulliot was hovering around the 10,000 mark after the hand.
Super Dario vs. The Great Dane
Dario Minieri was moved to table 11 to join Gus Hansen and they got things going right away.
Minieri made it 500 to go before the flop and Hansen called from the big blind. The flop came J 9 4 and Hansen checked. Minieri bet 700 and Hansen mucked his hand. That minor scuffle was just a sign of things to come.
In another hand, Hansen raised to 625 under the gun and action folded around to Minieri on the button. He made the call and the flop came K Q 8 . Hansen bet 700 and Minieri moved all in, having Hansen covered. "The Great Dane" made the call and showed Q Q for a flopped set. Minieri flipped K 10 for top pair and few outs. The turn was the 9 , giving Minieri a straight draw but the river brought the 4 and Hansen doubled up to around 12,000. Minieri was down to 11,000.
Elezra Pushes Back
Preflop, the player in seat 1 raised to 600. Seat 3 called and the action was on Eli Elezra. He proceeded to pop it to 2,400 to go. Both players tucked tail and ran for the hills, leaving the pot to Elezra. He was around 9,000 in chips after the hand.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Not a Safe Seat in the House
Upon getting down to 27 players, the 4 tables were condensed and the players were re-seated at three new tables. Despite this change of scenery the competition remained as fierce as ever. The players at each of the tables included:
Table 5: Amit “amak316” Makhija, Jon “FatalError” Aguiar, Lyric Duveyoung, Michael Banducci, Alan “The Usher” Sass
Table 10: Michael Binger, Nenad Medic, John Juanda, Clonie Gowen, Name Le, Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet
Table 15: Jeff “YellowSub86” Williams, Ray “ExitOnly” Coburn, Jamie “TheCronic420” Rosen, Craig “MrCasino” Gray, Randy “Randers” Haddox, Daniel Negreanu
Gould Ousts Juanda
John Juanda raised to 14,000 from the cutoff, Peter Gould raised to 54,000 from the button, and, with only 130,000 chips remaining, Juanda opted only to call. The two saw a flop of Q 7 6 and Juanda immediately pushed his remaining 90,000 chips all-in. Gould went into the tank, believing Juanda to have a strong hand. Ultimately Gould made the call and was relieved to his T T far ahead of Juanda’s A K . The turn and river were the 9 and Q , and Gould took a walk from the table to celebrate his win and calm his nerves. Gould now has 350,000 chips.
Banducci’s Bluff Goes Bad
On a flop of J 6 3 , Michael Banducci led a 55,000 bet into Alan Jaffray. Jaffray called and the dealer laid out the Q . Banducci pushed out a mountain of orange T5,000 chips, putting Jaffray to a decision for his remaining 130,000 chips. Jaffray leaned back in his chair with his hands behind his head, his smile belying his inner-turmoil. He finally mustered up the will to make the call and flipped up K J . Banducci unabashedly showed his bluff: A 7 . The 5 appeared on the river and Jaffray’s stack soared to 575,000. Banducci’s mistimed bluff chopped his stack to 300,000.
Blind Battle Claims Negreanu
A button limper, Phil Nguyen in the small blind, and Daniel Negreanu saw a flop of J 8 7 . Nguyen bet out 15,000 and Negreanu called. The button folded and the two blinds watched the dealer flip up the J . Again Nguyen led out – this time for 30,000 – but Negreanu came over the top for 100,000 total. Nguyen quickly raised all-in for 50,000 more and Negreanu had no choice to call with T 9 , an open-ended straight-flush draw. Unfortunately for him, Nguyen had turned a full house with J 8 and Negreanu was drawing to 2-outs. The river came Q and Nguyen more than doubled up to 400,000. Negreanu, left with 30,000 after the hand, busted a short time later when his A-2 ran into the A-K of Ray “ExitOnly” Coburn.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Phil Hellmuth: Dealer Instructor
While most of the players remaining are interested in accumulating a big stack and winning hundreds of thousands of dollars, Phil Hellmuth has a much bigger concern: dealer technique. As the dealer shuffled the deck between hands, Hellmuth remarked that he was not following proper World Series of Poker dealing protocol, “It should be shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, cut.” Not content with simply telling the dealer how to do his job, Hellmuth proceeded to grab the deck and show him the proper technique. Unconvinced that the dealer was imbibing the Poker Brat’s wisdom, he suggested, “Let’s call the floor.” Mercifully, as Hellmuth sought out a floorman, John Juanda implored, “Just let him deal!” which settled Hellmuth down (as much as is possible) and allowed play to resume at the table.
Olson Busts Gazes
Bill Gazes got all-in before the flop against Carl “colson10” Olson. The two turned over their hands:
Gazes: A K
Olson: A Q
The flop was A 9 7 , keeping Olson on track for an appearance on day 2, but the Q on the turn crushed his hopes, and the 9 on the river was the nail in the coffin. Gazes lamented the fact that he has now played three straight tournaments late into day 1, only to be eliminated before the day’s conclusion. Carl Olson now has 70,000 chips.
Maridu Doubles Up, Crashes Out
With only 8,000 chips remaining, Maria Mayrinck moved all-in from under-the-gun. The UTG+1 player moved all-in behind her for nearly 50,000 and action folded around to Marco “CrazyMarco” Johnson, who, after a bit of thought, folded A-Q face up. Mayrinck tabled A-8, noting that she had only looked at one of her cards, and her opponent showed J-J. The flop came A-8-7 and gave Mayrinck the lead. A queen on the turn mocked Johnson, but did nothing to diminish Mayrinck’s lead. The river was a blank and doubled Maridu up to 17,000. Her joy would not last long, however, as she would be eliminated by Johnson only one orbit later.

A Blessing in Disguise
As a result of a table break, Lee Watkinson found himself moved directly to Daniel Negreanu’s right. If that wasn’t bad enough, Phil Ivey also resides at the table. It turned out to be a fortuitous move, however, as Watkinson was soon to double up. Ivey, Watkinson, and Negreanu saw a flop of 9 7 6 . Ivey checked to Watkinson, who moved all-in for about 20,000. Negreanu made the call and after Ivey folded the two showed their cards:
Watkinson: T 8
Negreanu: J J
Watkinson had flopped perfectly and Negreanu was now drawing incredibly slim. The turn 4 gave Negreanu a flush draw, making Watkinson sweat a little. The river was the 4 , fooling Negreanu for a moment, but sealing the pot for Watkinson. The pot took Watkinson up to around 45,000. Negreanu, unphased, still has over 90,000.
“Good Call”
With the board reading J J 3 T , Romuald Pycior checked to Michael Binger, who slid out a bet of 4,000. Pycior made a quick call and the dealer flipped the 6 . Again Pycior checked, enticing Binger to lay out a bet of 8,500. Pycior thought a bit more carefully this time, but ultimately made the call. Binger whispered, “Good call” and Pycior flipped up his A 3 in a none-too-convincing manner. The jacks and threes were best though, and Pycior now has 54,000.
Josephy Runner-Runnered
Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy got his last 10,000 chips in before the flop in a dominating position: his K K against Randy Cherkas’ J J . The flop was a safe one: 9 7 6 , but the turn Q gave Cherkas a flush draw. The river was the 3 , completing the flush and sending a displeased Josephy out of the Amazon Room.

Vanessa Rousso Busts
After hanging on with a short stack for a few orbits, Rousso got her last 5,000 chips into the pot with K Q against her opponent’s 8 8 . When the board rolled out T 7 5 T 5 , she slipped away from her table and disappeared behind the rail.
Ivey Doubles Up With Ease
Pre-flop, Daniel Negreanu raised to 2,400 and was called by Phil Ivey and another player. The flop came T 8 6 and the players checked around. On the A turn, Ivey bet 8,500 and was raised by his opponent to 18,500. Negreanu quickly folded and, with the action back around to him, Ivey moved all-in for about 26,000. His opponent called and showed A-K, but was well behind Ivey’s A 8 . The river was a blank and Ivey now has a stack of over 50,000.
No Mo’ Toto
Toto Leonidas, all-in pre-flop, found himself dominated by his opponent. His A J would need major help to overcome the A Q of his adversary. The flop came with an ace, pairing both players, but neither the turn nor river were a jack, and Leonidas joins the growing list of players to be eliminated today.

Gold Goes Home
Jamie Gold was eliminated when he pushed his short stack all-in over two limpers. The first limper called and the second raised all-in for an additional 4,000. The initial raiser was priced into the call and the three turned over:
Gold: 6 5
Initial Limper: 7 6
Pre-flop caller: 8 8
The board was dealt K T 4 Q A and Gold was sent to the rail.
Batista Crippled
An early position raiser made it 1,800 to go, and got two callers, the cutoff and the button. After the small blind folded, Chad “lilholdem954” Batista moved all-in for 30,000 in the big blind. Two folds ensued, but the third player made the call. Batista turned over 2 2 to the shock of the table, and his opponent revealed Q Q . The flop of 7 5 3 left Batista needing a deuce or runner-runner straight to win the pot, but the turn and river were the 8 and 9 . Batista’s stack was reduced to 11,000.
“Fossilman” Doubles Up
On a flop of J 8 4 , Greg Raymer check-raised all-in – about 7,500 chips – and his opponent thought for a brief time and called. Raymer flipped up T 9 for an open-ended straight draw and back-door flush draw while his opponent had K 4 for a fairly meager bottom pair and back-door flush draw. The 7 on the turn ended the suspense and doubled Raymer up to 18,000.

Big Hands and Storylines:
